North Carolina outer Banks in May
 

meeting up with relatives in Raleigh Durham Then driving down the outer banks highway to North Myrtle Beach None of us have visited this part of North Carolina and would appreciate suggestions of things to do and see We are fairly active seniors, .any and all advice and suggestions greatly appreciated We love history, nature, sight seeing in general

New Bern This old Colonial town was founded in 1710 by Swiss and German settlers who named it after Bern, Switzerland. The town has three historic districts with some homes and buildings dating back to the early 1700s. It exudes Old South charm and is filled with quaint boutiques and eateries, riverfront attractions, lively entertainment. Visit 1770 Tyrone Palace and gardens.

Wilmington, NC. Reportedly this antebellum Old South town has the largest historic district in North Carolina with many buildings dating from the 1840s. It is an authentic Southern town with good beaches and better water and waves.

I'm unfamiliar with the Outer Banks Highway. What route/routes number/s are you referring to?

Understanding you've not been to the area, but Raleigh is in North Carolina and your ultimate destination, North Myrtle Beach, is in South Carolina.

If you are taking a couple of days to travel from Raleigh to North Myrtle Beach then New Bern & Wilmington makes some sense as places to visit. Otherwise why not just drive directly from Raleigh to North Myrtle Beach? Plenty of history, nature, and sightseeing there.

OBX girl gives good advice. And go on south of NMB to Georgetown and Charleston for day trips maybe. The Outer Banks is REALLY out there
