North Carolina for a few days
 

Hi
My son will be in Southern Pine on business in July and we are going to go visit him. Flying in fron Charlotte . Any suggestions of what to see and do? Thought about traveling up to Duke, take in a Durham game, maybe go to myrtle beach? Not a golfer. Just my husband and I with no set plans for a few days. Thanks. We like to sightsee , the beach and I like to take pictures. We will stay with my son for a day but then explore. Also any hotels?

You can go to the mountains. You can go to the beach. Southern Pines is a fun place to explore (pinehurst nearby) for a day or so. You could do a wine tour in the Yadkin Valley nearby or on up toward the mountains.
Asheville and Biltmore House. If you go to the beach, I would choose a nicer beach than Myrtle--which is almost ANY, IMO!!
But to be specific, there are beaches at Wilmington, or around MB there are lovely quiet beaches with GREAT seafood (I would highly recommend Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort) nearby at Murrell's Inlet, for example.
In the mid part of the state near Southern Pines is a pottery area the likes of which I don't think exists anywhere else--Seagrove. you could spend the day there and see MANY potteries (there are over 100). Start at Jugtown and Ben Owen's pottery if you go.
Winston Salem is a great visit--you could see a AAA baseball game there, and visit Old Salem, and the southern decorative arts Museum. The zoo is in Asheboro, near Seagrove.
LOTS to do. Be sure to eat some good NC BBQ!!

If you went to the beach at Litchfield there is Brookgreen Gardens to see. It is a former plantation purchased by the NYC Huntingtons for their winter home She was a sculptor of mammoth proportions and her sculptors are around the gardens plus a wonderful and eclectic art collection of theirs. Across the highway is their home, Atalanta, which is a Moorish design and very "interesting" in an odd way. Good picture vistas and you can take a boat tour of the river.
Pawley's Island just a little further on south has an historic district where the planters from Charleston spent summers to escape malarial mosquitos. And then just 15 minutes further is Hobcaw Barony, a nature preserve from the Baruch family, and then there is Georgetown, with WONDERFUL Revolutionary War era homes.

July will be VERY hot and humid. I would head immediately for the mountains - visit Asheville and drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. Otherwise head immediately for the beach and hope for some sea breezes.
