North Carolina airports

Need to go to Elon and Asheville. (More colleges with dtr - this time husband is going - I have already seen every college in the norther hemisphere and can't stand it any longer)

Seems to make sense to fly into one city and out of another - perhaps Greensboro and then Raleigh Durham with one way car rental between. But looking for any better ideas (leaving from Boston or perhaps Manchester, NH)

Why not fly into Asheville airport and out of Greensboro? Elon is closer to Greensboro, and I'm not sure why you'd want to fly into Greensboro, out of Raleigh or vice versa? They're only about 1 hr. 20 min. or so apart driving time. Hope your dtr will find a school to her liking here in North Carolina!

GSO is my principal airport, but be forewarned it is usually much more expensive than RDU or CLT.

I would be surprised if you can get a very satisfactory fare flying open jaw, but maybe so.
In spite of cmcfong's always good info, sometimes GSO can give a cheap fare--we fly out of Charlotte!! And the other day I found a flight from Southern PInes to Denver for HALF what I can find from here!!
Anyway, Continental flies to Asheville (among others). It might give a better fare than USAir, for example.
AirTran is flying into Charlotte now and that would be just about half way between Elon and Asheville--hour and a half. Also, I think with AirTran you can fly one way--that might work after all.
Check on Charlotte--sometimes miracles happen and a cheap fare comes up. But we do have all the airlines now--including the cheaper ones.
You might look on kayak.com--they give everyone's fares.
Asheville is only about a 3 hour drive from Burlington (Elon).

Thanks for all your replies. They could fly on USAirways Boston-Asheville and then Greensboro-Boston for about $200-250 each - there is a huge difference depending on time of day of flight. For example, leaving Boston at 6 AM instead of 8 AM saves $150. I will still research all options - I know Charlotte would work and while it means back-tracking in driving, the time saved by flying to one end of trip and then leaving from the other is likely negated by the number of NS flights Bos-Charlotte (Asheville and Greensboro involve a connection)

Wow--Great price. Of course, you are flying from a major hub. Enjoy your time. The driving is easy.

Glad we could help, Gail. Gretchen is right ... the driving is easy once they get here! Tell them to have some pork bbq and sweet tea while they're here!
