planning short trip to n.c. want to visit unc and duke and then go to charlotte. what to do and see on way down to charlotte. where should we stay for one nite?

Fran,<BR><BR>Your post leaves many questions unanswered, such as how are you traveling and what you like to do and see. That said, if you are flying into RDU (Raleigh-Durham) I would stay at the Holiday Inn, RTP. Close to both Chapel Hill and Durham and Raleigh as well. Great hotel.<BR><BR>Dick

Change your plans and avoid N.C. if at all possible. Best thing that could happen to that state is to divide it up between Va. and S.C. if they would accept it!

go to Old Salem, a Moravian Village near winston-Salem

fran,<BR><BR>I lived most of my life in NC (Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem). From Durham to Charlotte, if you have one night as you indicated, I second D.J.'s recommendation of visiting Old Salem.<BR><BR>Actually, Old Salem is in downtown (such as it is) Winston-Salem, just off Business 40. I recommend that you stay in the Brookstown Inn, from which you can walk to Old Salem. From the Inn, you can also walk across the street to a great little restaurant called South By Southwest.<BR><BR>Another restaurant suggestion that's easily accessible from your location is Noble's Grill. Just take Business 40 West to the Knollwood Ave. exit, go over the I-40 bridge and Noble's is in the Krispy Kreme Headquarters building on your right. There are other very nice restaurants in this small but great town--but this one is probably the easiest to get to, is consistent, and is certainly in the top five in W/S.<BR><BR>My wife & I moved after living there 15 years. We miss it!! P.S., if you want to visit a REAL college, you need to see Wake Forest anyway. (In advance of all you attacking dookies and heels, that last comment was supposed to be humor.)<BR><BR>Have a great trip!

Even though Chuck is a Demon (Deacon), his advice is good. There is also a restaurant in Old Salem named somthing like "The Brothers' Tavern." It has an Old-Salem name and is quite good.<BR><BR>In Charlotte, are you looking at UNCC (North east part of town)? If your heading there after Winston-Salem, take highway 52 south to highway 49 (I think that's right, I don't have a map in front of me). Don't take i_40 to I-77 south, it will take you out of the way.

ncgrrl,<BR><BR>thanks for going easy on a poor Demon Deacon--admit it, it's hard to pick on us ever since Tim Duncan left Joel Coliseum.<BR><BR>I think the restaurant ncgrrl is thinking of is called simply, Salem Tavern. I haven't been in a while, but it was always pretty good.<BR><BR>Also, ncgrrl's suggestion about not taking I-40 and I-77 from W/S to get to UNCC is a good one. However, you can take Highway 52 South from W/S (nice divided 4 lane, at least 60 MPH speed limit) and then take I-85 South. I can't remember the exact exit for UNCC, but you can get to it from I-85 North of Charlotte.
