This destination really caught my eye in an article in this month's Outside magazine on great family vacations. Check it out: http://away.com/outside/destinations...cobrand_id=258

It's been years since I've been there, so I'm not sure how much of this is still true. You were only able to get there by boat, or a private plane. There was a restaurant/small food store, but for major purchases you had to go landside. Most if not all transportation on the island was done by golf carts. Many private houses to rent, some mansions, some just nice beach homes. That's about all I can remember, except for the restaurant, it was a big place, as many weekend boaters came in there for lunch, and every inch of the walls was covered with money(mostly $1 and foreign bills), but it was still a nice sum of cash hanging on the wall. The more drunk we got there, we were thinking of how to 'hit' the place for all that money. Obviously we were just being silly, and mostly drunk, but I do remember a wonderful afternoon there. If you need to get away from it ALL, this would be the place, but don't expect anything else beyond that, except on weekends when boaters come in to have few drinks.

This applies to diazkris: I went to the site you referred to and registered and st. george island, block island and a few others were featured but not north captiva island in florida. Did you see it somewhere else perhaps?

AAFrequent Flyer: hey you must have been blasted cause you had to take a short boat trip from North Captiva to Cabbage Key where the restaurant you described awaits.

Folklore says it is the place Jimmy Buffet had in mind when he wrote "Cheeseburger in Paradise." If not, it is certainly believable. I have left many dollars on the walls there and it is a wonderful afternoon to boat there, have lunch and a little walk around the island.

dcgc,
You're right. Looks like you have to pay to see the article on North Captiva. The article is in this month's Outside magazine's Traveler Issue. Check it out a bookstore.
