North Beach -Want GREAT Italian food...

Any suggestions for the North Beach, SF area? My husband loves gnocchi, pesto, and any kind of pasta. Would love to enjoy a really great "intimate" kind of dinner there one night. We are staying in the fisherman's Wharf area...but it looks like North Beach is within walking distance. Is this a pretty safe area of town?

I lived in the City for 3 years in the early 90's and I remember a housing project on Bay street, that is right between Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach. My husband used to work down there at night and it was a problem sometimes. Things could of changed by now though.
My favorite restaurant used to be North Beach restaurant, but the last time I was there the food was great but the feeling was different.
Rose Pistola has always been very good. Also Fior d' Italia in the San Remo is also very nice.

If your husband likes gnocchi then he must try the sweet potato gnocchi at Da Flora. It is a bit quirky, but they put a lot of love into the cooking.

it's pretty safe to walk there, it is not a dangerous part of town. But use everyday caution you normally would in any city. (glimmer2- the housing project has been replaced with condos that you /I mean I/ can't afford).

You could take the #30 bus that travels along Columbus street if you want. Why not just check out the menus and restaurants and pick one of your liking; it's what we do all the time and haven't been disappointed.

Rose Pistola is good. A small place with a lot of character is Cafe Macaroni in the same area. Go to Tosca for a drink.
