Norfolk to Hatteras: Where to stop in between for a bite to eat?

I'm thinking of taking a quick trip to see some friends in Hatteras, North Carolina. I'd fly into Norfolk and drive to Hatteras. Does anyone have any recommendations for somewhere to stop in between for a bite/stretch my legs? Preferably somewhere really local---no big chains, etc.

Any biters out there?

Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head look to be about the halfway point; any favorites here?

As I remember, there isn't much, and depending on the time of year and weather, there may be even less. The drive from Norfolk to Hatteras is through a fairly bare area, and while there are fast food places, I am guessing that there aren't a lot of local, neat places open along the way. I hope I am wrong.

By the way, Hatteras is both an area (Outer Banks) and a place, so where you are going might affect the answer.

All very local:

Captain Franks, MP 4.5 Bypass, A great hot dog and a beach institution

Sam N Omies, MP 16.5 Beach road, another institution going on 70 years, very good food but big city prices. You can walk across the street to Jennette's Pier for a good view.

Nags Head Pier, MP 11 Beach Road, good food with a view

Flying Fish Cafe, MP 10 Bypass, great food

Beach side you can stretch your legs on the beach or piers. Or, after lunch head south for another 20 minutes or so. After crossing Oregon Inlet into Hatteras National Seashore there are some easy pull offs for gorgeous beach vistas.

Have a great trip and enjoy!

I'll be just south of Rodanthe if that makes a difference...

Actually just looked at google I see that it does. I think I originally was looking at mileage all the way to the tip.

Thanks for the tips obxgirl!

Rodanthe isn't as far as Hatteras but it's still a hike, maybe 2-2.5 hours from the airport depending on traffic. I'd power on to the OBX for lunch.

Except to go out of your way, there's no really good local place to stop before you get to NC (30 to 40 minutes). Between the VA/NC border and the OBX it's mostly fast food or not worth your time. The Weeping Radish Farm Brewery in Jarvisburg is a local micro brewery which serves food, an eclectic mix of burgers, brats, and schnitzel.

If your trip is in April or May, you can get possibly local but certainly fresh strawberries at any of a bunch of market stands. Grandy is my preference but most are good (except Powells).
