Non-Tacky Florida Keys

Yes, yes, I am big ol' snob, but I'm trying to figure out if there's a spot in the Keys that's relatively unspoiled, not tourist-trappy, not overrun with strip malls, etc. I love snorkeling, hiking and kayaking, and would like to try at least a resort dive.

I was last in the Keys as a college student, and I camped at Bahia Honda, which was awesome. (Sadly, no sites are available in early March.) I'm not looking to spend a huge amount on lodging, but I don't want to stay in a fleabag, either. Thanks so much for your help.

Nope.

I don't know about some of those little mom and pop motels that I saw signs for in the upper/middle keys when we drove down Route 1 in November. Some of them sure looked cute.

Of course, you're still only a few blocks from the strip malls and such.

I think Islamorada would be the closest to unspoiled, but don't have a suggestion for a hotel - Sorry. Good luck to you!

I'm not sure such a place exists anymore nut you may enjoy the trip out to the Dry Tortugas. Also, if you are loooking to spend most of your time on or in the water, you'll not have to worry about the other stuff anyway. Here are some other ideas www.keyscamping.com http://goflorida.about.com/od/florid...ys_camping.htm

Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada is a total class place as is Hawk's Cay on Duck Key. Duck Key is all fine homes and the resort. The nearest strip mall is in Marathon 10 miles away.

Islamorada is residential with fishing marinas and not touristy Key West. However, there are restaurants and shops.

Cheeca Lodge is closed due to a fire on New Year's eve.

there's a little bit of "tacky" all throughout the keys....that's what sort of makes it special...
