Adult daughter and I will be spending a long weekend in FLL - visiting my brother but need some non-beach activities for daytime. Have researched some kayak trips thru mangroves that sound interesting, but can't get anyone to email me back or answer the phone. Looking for that type of thing - something between basking in the sun and parasailing (which daughter would love but I will take a pass on). Outdoor museums, boat ride thru something interesting - that sort of thing.

Thanks. Staying in Deerfield Beach. Will have car. Just booked 3 hour kayak trip for Sunday and realized in addition to advertised birdlife and manatees, there may be gators and wondering if unused Alaska bear repellant works on alligators. Also remembering story in NY Times about gigantic pythons and iguanas released in swampy areas.

Will research other suggestions while snowed in this weekend.

Hi Gail,

For Fort Lauderdale--taking the water taxi on the intracoastal waterway in Fort Lauderdale was a fun and educational way of getting out on the water. Either the driver or money collector discusses the story of the homes and yachts you're seeing. I also enjoyed renting a bike and doing the loops at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park which take you to spots where you can have a picnic along the Intracoastal Waterway. I appreciated that park because it showed what Florida probably looked like prior to the mega-developments.

Go to one of the Spring Training camps near WPB. Cardinals in WPB, Mets in Port St Lucie. Won't be games but can walk around complex and watch practices.

For some terrific birdwatching from a boardwalk in a wetland, Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Boynton Beach is very worthwhile. You may even see gators (from a safe distance.) http://www.pbcgov.com/waterutilities/wakodahatchee/
Gumbo limbo nature center is in Boca Raton, right across from the beach. They have nature exhibits and live marine animals, mostly, I believe, which are being rehabilitated. There's also a tower that you can climb with a nice view of the ocean and surrounding woods and mangroves. http://www.gumbolimbo.org/
Go to Palm Beach and walk on Worth Avenue. One of my favorite places anywhere is The Society of the Four Arts Gardens in Palm Beach. Really lovely. http://www.fourarts.org/gardens
