NOLA Jazz Fest - Is the neighborhood near the fairgrounds safe to stay in?

I remember the neighborhood next to the fairgrounds being a little sketchy but my other friend says she thought it was a "cute" neighborhood. We are traveling with a large group of people to Jazz Fest and one of our friends is thinking of staying in that area as opposed to the French Quarter. So he'll be traveling solo from that neighborhood to the French Quarter at night since that's where the rest of our group will be at that time.

Also, does anyone know how far away that neighborhood is to the French Quarter? Is it walking distance?

All help is appreciated!

Thanks!!

I think it would be O.K. to stay near there.

I don't think it is walking distance, but streetcars run up and down Canal Street to the Museum, which is close to the Fairground. The website (http://www.norta.com/fares_passes/Passes/index.html) says they have passes for the JazzFest.
