No Hollywood Hookers, CA

Last time we spent a night on the strip, by nightfall, our nice (so-we-thought), quiet hotel tranformed into streetwalker slumsville. We would like to avoid this next time. What hotels are clean, safe, family-oriented, but in the heart of the city for shopping, dining, nightlife (the dancing kind) Also, any restaurant suggestions?

The last time on this board that I warned someone about Hollywood, I got a bunch of follow-ups that said "oh, no, you're wrong -- Hollywood's been cleaned up."

I guess "cleaned up" is all a matter of definition.

Well, I found the term "night and day" literally applied to the Hollywood strip!! What you see during the day is definitely NOT what you see at night! That's why I figured we must've just picked a bad spot along the strip. Other comments?

Where did you stay before? The Strip is Sunset Blvd, not Hollywood Blvd. The Roosevelt seems to be a good choice. I've had out-of town guests stay there and no complaints about the neighborhood.I've also gone there after a show for drinks and not noticed anything. Sunset and Santa Monica tend to get more action. You could also try hotels in Studio City (Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn comes to mind)..good freeway location, good surface routes to H-wood , near Universal, and Studio City has plenty of restaurants in a variety of price ranges.

DON'T stay on the Sunset Strip at all if you want to avoid that environment! The Sheraton or Hilton at Universal City are nice places (Hilton is better), but of course, you'll need a car. Try looking for something in Century City or Beverly Hills IF your budget can afford it (you might get a good deal at the Beverly Hilton or perhaps the Renaissance). DON'T stay anyplace in Hollywood either!!
