No golf please
 

We are planning a trip next year to coastal Georgia - we visiting SC/NC 4 years ago and found heavon in several places but also experienced hell (Myrtle Beach).

Could anyone suggest a coastal location for two weeks -
we like sailing, kayaing, wildlife, good food and local culture

Do not like - golf, strip malls, Wendys etc

any suggestions welcome

This is a tough one. I hate all that stuff too, and seem to only find respite in the Adirondacks.

I suppose I could suggest Ocracoke Island, NC, but that's changing too. Or maybe the towns just north of Hateras. They may not be totoally pristine, but they are near a wonderful wildlife preserve, Pea Island.

And I like Sanibel a lot; even though it can be a bit of a mob scene it doesn't have the strip mall feel. The Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge is so fabulous, as well as the other refuges, and kayaking the mangrove swamps is wonderful.

OOPS - sorry, I see you were looking for a spot in Georgia.

I think St. Simons may be closest to what you are looking for.

With two weeks, be sure to go to Cumberland Island. If you could swing a couple of night ON the island at the Greyfield Inn, that would be wonderful. The ferry for day-trips is from St. Mary's GA. The inn ferry for overnights is from Amelia Island. Amelia Island would be another option - although it's in Florida (just over the state line).

If you have deep pockets, look into the Cloister in Ga and the Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island. There are more moderate options as well.

mmm! you seem to have read my mind - in the last 3 trips to the US we have been to Beaufort NC (Hateras), The Adirondacks and Miami (trip to Sanibel).

Beaufort came tops!
