NO Cemetaries

I'm visiting NO in May for the 1st time. The cemetaries are at the top of my list of sights to see. First which are the most interesting? Second should we do a tour? And which is the best tour? I had read in my research that you should not be wandering around the cemetaries alone but should remain in a group because could be unsafe, even during the day. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes tours are the best bet. I like www.saveoutcemeteries.org they are historically accurate and a nonprofit group. I have taken both their tours, worthwhile.

If you do want a look- take the Canal Streetcar- "cemetery" route, miles of cemeteries to look at, and very open, just be aware of your surroundings and don't go so far in you can't see out. :)

Slight typo in BQs post: it should be saveouRcemeteries.org & they are fantastic! We went to St. Louis #1 with Billy.

We did a cemetery tour with the New Orleans Historic Walking Tour Co and it was great - we saw St Louis No. 1, which is the cemetery closest to the FQ.

I very much agree with J Correa on Historic New Orleans Walking Tours. In fact, something I read before we went (wish I could tell you the exact source but it's been four years and I read a lot of stuff before we went) said that while Save Our Cemeteries is a great organization, Historic New Orleans Walking Tours actually does a better tour.

Should have added that their website is tourneworleans.com
