No Amtrack and NJ Transit
There is no Amtrack or NJ Transit between NYC and Newark NJ. There is a bridge on fire on the Hackensack River, the base of the bridge is all wood.
It looks like train service will be out for several days at the least, so if you are planning on Amtrack or take NJ Transit, you will need to make other arrangements. |
WOW, between that and this afternoon's earth slide blocking one of the major arteries into the city, it's going to be a tough commute tomorrow morning.
Can anybody say "vacation day"? ((b)) |
You can probably take the Path trains from Newark or Hoboken into NYC and then subway or other ground transportation from there as an alternate route.
|
This is no time to live in NJ and have tickets for a play in NYC.
Which bridge? What town? |
"The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. at the base of Amtrak's Portal drawbridge over the Hackensack River between Secaucus and Kearny."
That's from the NY Daily News. ((b)) |
The pictures of the bridge looked a bit grim tonight on the news. The base of the bridge burned as did quite a bit of the track. I thought it odd that there was only 1 fire boat putting a stream of water on a very large fire.
If you are planning a trip into the city from Philly or NJ on public transit, there are buses and the path out of Newark Penn Station into Manhattan. Also if you are coming into the city from Newark Airport, you will have to go by way of Newark Penn Station on the Path which will take you into Manhattan, the midtown stop would be 33rd St and 6th Ave. |
