No a/c in Timberline & others?
I am starting to book rooms for a vacation in mid-July and just noticed that two of the places we're interested in -- Timberline on Mt. Hood and the Sandlake Country Inn near Tillamook -- have no air conditioning. Both of these are pretty pricey, so I wouldn't want to be sweating all night long. What's the likelihood that a mid-July evening will be hot? Also, is Timberline really worth the cost (over $200 a night)...or should we just visit it during the day and keep on driving? Thanks!

Yes, A/C will most likely not be needed. Definitely not at Timberline, and at Tillamook only if we are having some freak heat wave. I am not familiar with the Tillamook inn, but Timberline is special (although rustic, so don't expect luxury) and worth it, IMO.

Most of the rooms are very small.
My choice would be to go there for lunch and to spend the night in the lovely town of Hood River, staying at the Best Western in a room with a deck overlooking the Columbia River. A few years ago I booked one of the very few fireplace rooms. It was nice. Later I stayed in a standard room; it was beyond tiny. |
You do realize Timberline is at about 6000' - right? You will much more likely need a warm coat than a/c at night.

We stayed at the Timberline Lodge in the middle of July and it was fine. There were fans in the rooms. The whole place has much more flavor than staying at a Best Western anywhere. It was delightful!

Google "timberline lodge trip advisor" and see what people say about it when they paid $85 a night.
Then Google "best western hood river trip advisor" and compare. Timberline Lodge is well worth a visit and a lunch, but it is not a good hotel. |
I disagree, HTTY.

That's o.k. with me. Fifteen or more years ago I stayed at Timberline Lodge where I had a room and dinner for two at about $139. It was a good deal. We enjoyed ourselves.
The OP asks if it worth over $200 a night for what I assume is a standard room, and I've given my answer. I hope gmc will take into account all the points of view offered here and at TripAdvisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...egon.html#TOPC |
