Want to take advantage of a great airfare that lands in Newark but I am staying downtown Manhattan. How much would a cab be from the neward airport? thanks so much

If you are concerned about airfare, maybe you'd want to save some more money by taking the train right into Manhattan? You can take Airtrain and the NJ Transit train directly to Penn Station:

1) When you say "downtown" Manhattan that usually means the southern part of the island while "midtown" is where most people usually stay.

2) If you want door to door transport, a cab is not the best option. Use a car service like dial7.com that will be cheaper than a cab.

3) Depending on where you're staying and how many you are, it's possible an Express bus or train may be a cheaper option as Andrew suggests.

Like mclaurie says, use a car service from EWR instead of a cab.

If you decide to use public transportation, and you DO mean going to the financial district, you should take the AirTrain and NJ Transit only to Newark Penn. From there, switch to PATH train to lower Manhattan.

to add numbers to the helpful advice given here:
A car service (door to door, like a taxi would be, but you call a specific company and they quote you a set fare), Newark to Manhattan (including toll, tip) will be about $60-65 will vary depending on specific location, but this gives you a rough idea.
Bus or train EWR to midtown is about $15 per person. If you need a taxi to get from midtown to your hotel, add another $10-15-20? (per car, not per person)
For 3 people, car servcie makes the most sense.
For one, with minimal luggage and if staying near midtown, bus or train works fine
