"Nine" or "Gypsy"
 

I've read that &quot;Nine&quot; with Antonio Bandaras has turned out to be a bit better than expected and &quot;Gypsy&quot; with Bernadette Peters, while very good - just not as great as expected. I already have tickets for &quot;Lion King,&quot; &quot;The Play What I Wrote,&quot; and &quot;Hairspray&quot; for visit in May. <BR><BR>I would like to see &quot;Nine&quot; or &quot;Gypsy&quot; but with Broadway ticket prices - Whew - gotta watch my budget.<BR><BR>Has anyone seen either one or both?<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR><BR>Zig

Have tickets for NINE so can only report that advance publicity has helped. Roundabout has extended the normal 3-month run til 8/10. <BR><BR>Gypsy ,however , will be around for a while so you might want to consider a 2nd trip to the Big Apple to see it.

If I were choosing, it would be Nine. I saw the original and I have seen Gypsy too many times:)<BR>That is great that you have tickets to The Play Wot I Wrote! <BR>That will be some fun visit in May:)

You might try the TKTS booth for half price tickets the day of performance. Was just there and while we had already seen Gypsy, we got 12th row center Orch for Modern Millie. That day they did also have 1/2 price for Gypsy. I loved them both.

FYI...My son and daughter-in-law who live in NYC and see &quot;everything&quot; saw Nine this week and were very disappointed.

Elainee, I'm just curious. I'll be seeing Nine the end of May regardless. But did your son and daughter-in-law find the production disappointing? Or were they disappointed with the show itself? I know it is a bit &quot;offbeat&quot; and not everyone's &quot;cup of tea&quot;, but curious if they thought it was well done or not for what it is.

Patrick, we may be sitting next to each other, we also have ticket for Nine at the end of May. Wear a red carnation, I'll do the same :-)<BR><BR>We also have tickets to The Exonerated, The Play What I Wrote, Hank Williams - Lost Highway, Long Day's Journey Into Night and Hairspray. There are several others on my list, including Salome.

Hey Nina, no red carnation here, but our tickets are for Thursday night, May 29! Thoroughly Modern Millie on the 27, Hairspray matinee on May 28, and LifeX3 evening of 28th. We'll be sleeping on the day flight to London on the 30th, then a whole bunch of London theatre during our 15 days there.

We saw Gypsy on the opening night of previews and although Bernadette Peters was fantastic, we thought the production was just so-so. The other cast members were not up to snuff and for a Sam Mendes production is seemed a bid stale. We DID love Thoroughly Modern Millie, though.

Responding to the last comment and acting in a &quot;sense of fair play&quot;(!), I think it's worth noting that the first public performance of a show is going to be far from perfect! That's what previews are for!

I saw Nine this week and really enjoyed it. I was questioning it, but in the end thought Antonio Banderas really pulled it off. I thought the cast and he show were really quite good. Can't comment on Gypsy though. Enjoy!!!

Saw Bernadette Peters do &quot;Some People&quot; a few years back on the Tony Awards, and that alone must be worth the price of admission, if not a ticket to New York.

Why did my son and daughter-in-law not like Nine?? They thought the &quot;story&quot; was whiney, depressing, and self-indulgent, and dull. But, they admitted that the audience seemed to like it a lot more than they did. All shows are &quot;personal&quot;. I hated &quot;Frankie and Jonnie and the Clair de Lune. Again, whiney, self-indulgent, with characters we found uninteresting.

I have this thing that when I go to NYC I want to see something on Broadway - then, I want to see EVERYTHING on Broadway. Your responses have tempered my enthusiasm. If this Nine is anything like the original, and the NY Times seemed to like it, then we are definitely getting tickets to see it!<BR>But that is the lovely thing about Broadway, I never wanted to see Cats and loved Dance with Death, Hairspray is one play that I had to control myself not to jump up and dance:) <BR>I think Gypsy or Nine is a good choice considering these are unique and well liked plays in the past. <BR>I agree about Frankie and Johnny, but then, knowing the story, I never expected it to be a musical full of show -stoppers, in the way Nine and Gypsy are. <BR>Ziggy, have a great time!!<BR>

I saw Nine and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I loved the costumes, but thought the set was awful. The music is enjoyable and the acting, while not Tony caliber, is respectable. I am not seeing Gypsy for a few weeks yet. Frankie &amp; Johnnie I must say was a let down. I felt like they were having the same pathetic argument (just using different words) over and over again. The set was so dark you could barely see a thing (no pun intended) and the whole show was one gloomy mess. As for tickets to anything in NY, you should also always check out ebay. There was just recently someone selling 42 tickets to Millie because their school trip got cancelled due to the war.

I will be traveling with a group of 8 women who are spending a long weekend in NYC. We want to attend a Saturday matinee of a Broadway show. I was interested in the comment regarding purchasing half price tickets at a TKTS booth. Are they sold for Saturday matinee performances? We are staying at a hotel on west 49th close to Central Park. How do we find the TKTS office from this location? How early do we need to get there to get in line?<BR><BR>Thanks for any suggestions.

The TKTS booth is a couple blocks from your hotel. It's in Times Square at 47th Street. It opens at 10 a.m. for Saturday matinees. Best that you get in line by 9-9:15. Or, you can go to the TKTS booth downtown in the Battery Park area the day before. That booth sells Saturday matinee tickets on Friday.<BR>PS: If your hotel is on West 49th Street, you may be farther than you think from Central Park--10 blocks to be exact, about a half-mile walk.

Saw &quot;Gypsy&quot; Thursday night. Loved it! All the kids are amazing. Casting is overall perfect, especially Tammy Blanchard, who is positively luminous. And, Bernadette shines, as usual! Not to be missed.
