Nick's Fishmarket -- Oahu
Has anyone eaten at the Oahu Nick's Fishmarket AND the one on Maui? My husband and I ate at the one on Maui this past summer and loved it. We are going to be on Oahu this summer, and wondered how they compare to each other. We have the entertainment book, and there is a buy 1 dinner/get the 2nd free coupon, so we are hoping it's just as good as Maui! Also, where on Oahu is it located? Thanks!

We ate at Nick's in Waikiki but not in Maui. Thought the food was pretty good but wasn't crazy about the decor (tables, furnishings, etc.). Believe it's on Lewers Street, about three or four blocks from the beach. If I had a 2 for 1 coupon, I'd go back!

We ate a Nick's on Oahu a few years back using Entertainment coupon. Food was great, a little pricey. Very good service. It's on the first floor of a hotel, I don't remember the name. The only thing I don't like is there was a lady walking around the restaurant trying to sell you flower.

It is on Kalakaua Ave right at the beginning of Waikiki.
We eat here a couple of times a year...great service, and kind of romantic in that dark 70's style. We tend to go when they have specials on. 2 for 1 would definitely draw me in! |
Thanks!
Anyone else? |
Avoid Nick's at all costs! Below is my review posted in Fodor's Restaurant section on this site. My post was in December '03 based on our visit in October '03 (we were on our honeymoon). Other's reviews are just as bad.
"Overrated! Have to agree with the other poster who stated that Nick's is overrated....it is. Atmosphere is something out of the 70's; it's dark and has an odd decor. Food is average at best. My fish was good, but my wife's lobster was poor. Service was rushed and basically indifferent. Not worth the high prices. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. We can recommend John Dominis' restaurant as superb alternative." |
Funny how opinions of places can be so different. So much can come into play over one meal that two people can find such different experiences.
We have eaten at John Dominis many times. I find it overpriced and the service so rushed and indifferent that we won't go there at all anymore. But, it is a much prettier place and has a beautiful view from the windows. |
Nick's is one of my favorite restaurants on Oahu. I have always had great service and great food.
The one detractor is that there is no view. It is very expensive. If I am going to pay those kinds of prices I want to see more than the walls. Sesamee |
My wife and I just got back after spending ten days in Hawaii. We were so impressed with the service and quality of food at Nick's that we ate there 3 times. We have lived all over the world (Ireland, Hong Kong, London, Atalanta, San Antonio, Singapore and Cape Town)and have been to some very good restaurants but I think what we enjoyed the most was the very good service. On all three occassions the service was excellent. Prices are actually good compared to those of similar restaurants in other major cities like NY, Hong Kong or London. As for decor, perhaps a bit retro but lighting is soft, tables are well spaced and very comfortable seats. If you are into modern super minimalist boutique style restaurants where you are seated right on top of each other and the lighting feels like a hospital, then this isn't your place. But if you want a comfortable, soft enviromenment with good "live" background music that doesn't drown out your conversation - then Nick's is a good choice. If you want spectacular views go to Felix in Hong Kong or OXO Tower in London but be prepared to pay three times the price and I know the food/service is not as good.

I do not think the two are afillifated. Nick's on Maui is owned by Tri-Star, who also owns Sarento's on boith Maui and O`ahu. I recall reading a long history of Nick's a while ago and at one time they were owned by the same people (as well as other loctions on the mainland), but no longer. The restaurants were split up --don't remember all the details now.

Nick's Fishmarket is in the Waikiki Gateway Hotel. It is at the intersection where Kuhio Ave and Kalakaua meet. It is across Kalakaua from Fort DeRussey.

I have eaten at both and prefer the Nick's on Oahu. Great seafood and as mentioned earlier it does have a 70's ambience to the place. If your in town on a Sunday you should buy the Honolulu Advertiser paper and look in the dining out section for a 50% off coupon for the second entree that Nick's frequently runs in that paper. Also agree that John Dominis is very overpriced with so..so.food. Great view though if you arrive before the sun sets. Hope this helps.
Aloha! |
oops..just saw the part where you already have a coupon..

I have never had a bad meal at the Nicks on Oahu! I hear that coupon is really worth it, too. I've always had good service and good food. Have fun!

We just got back from Oahu last night, so still abit jet lagged, but I had to respond to this thread.
The first night we arrived, we thought we were going to walk down to Duke's for dinner (w/o reservations)! What a laugh! We ended up walking all over Waikkiki (just short of the blisters). It was 8:00PM at Duke's...1 3/4 Hr. wait...Cheesecake Factory the same ( this info also required a line wait to find out at each restaurant). DH was getting abit testy...and. OK I was getting frustrated as well, when I looked up and found ourselves standing in front of Nick's. Well, we had had dinner in Maui at Nick's, which was marvelous! And I had the trusty E-Book in my purse! ($27 coupon for Nick's on Oahu!). So we ventured into the restaurant and sheepishy asked if they could seat us. They DID so immediately!! (We were not what I considered dressed for the occassion). It was dark but they can turn the lights up if requested and the food/service/drinks were great! In fact, I had a drink there that I could not duplicate the other places we dined...a twist on Long Island Iced Tea..."Hawaiian Iced Tea" which was probably the best I had anywhere on Maui or Oahu!! Wish I had the recipe!! (Anthony??) So, I will be forever endeared to Nick's on Oahu! Belle is Back! |
