Calli,

Dallas is not the Metroplex. Dallas AND Fort Worth together make up the Metroplex.

pdxer Oct 10th, 2002 08:13 AM

Portland, OR is sometimes affectionately called Stumptown.

calli Oct 10th, 2002 08:19 AM

YOU...you are correct....DFW is called the metroplex..sorry!
Guess I was thrown off track by all the other Dallas posts above.

Webster Oct 10th, 2002 08:28 AM

Calli: Kansas City calls itself Cowtown (despite the derogatory intent). It's all over from a local T-shirt store named "Cowtown T's", to websites, to columns in the newspaper about "Cowtown Information", etc.

"Something": the name "Oz" for Australia has nothing to do with the Wizard of Oz. It's a phonetic nickname. Australia is abbreviated AUS, and with an accent it sounds like "Ozz". Australians are called Aussies, which to the ears of Americans sounds like "Ozzies".
