Nice San Francisco hotel with free parking outside downtown near muni

We are still deciding whether to stay in downtown SF and pay for parking[which is expensive] or out a little way and use pass.
Any suggestions on where to stay .We would like a nice hotel with free parkiing and close to MUNI transit.

Check the area of North Berkeley. The parking at the BART station is cheap. http://www.bart.gov/stations/NBRK/
No parking at the main Berkeley station.

It is aways better to stay in san francisco than to try and commute in and out. If you will be visiting on a weekend you should know that you can park for free starting on Friday through Monday at a BART station and then take BART to a convenient stop near your hotel.

Though you are limited to parking at a BART station for 24 hours that limitation does not apply to weekends.

Would doing that work for you?

Taking BART in and out each day would be $32 minimum for 2. I parked for less than that per day at the parking garage at Mason and O Farrell.

San Francisco is like Venice, Italy. You have to stay within it, IMHO.

tomfuller the OP asked about outside downtown SF not outside of SF and asked about places near MUNI not BART.

OP you might want to check out Cow Hollow Motor Inn, or Cow Hollow Suite, or the Coventry Motor Inn or the Chelsea, all have parking and are close to bus lines. Do a search on this forum and you will see they are fairly well recommended. Another frequently recommended place with parking is the Columbus Motor Inn.

That's only to and from the airport. From Millbrae, the one-way fare is $4.25, for two people round-trip, it would be $17.00.

I agree with SAB.

depending on your price point try

Laurel Inn, SF - in the inner Richmond near many MUNI lines; out of downtown. Parking is $20 but there's free continental breakfast; tea and cookies int he afternoon and large rooms. It's where friends/relatives stay when they visit. ROOMS $129-$209

mztery, I doubt that the residents of Laurel Heights/Pac Heights would call that area the inner Richmond .

I was trying to use a locator the OP might be able to reference in terms of being away from downtown. And it is definitely NOT Pac Heights although RE agents may think it is.

mztery Did you not see the "smiley face"? I know it's not Pac Heights, I was trying, apparently unsuccessfully, to have a little fun with you.

Thanks I think we will stay in union square or fisherman's wharf.
Maybe bid on priceline and see what we get for 4 star and pay for parking if the hotel we get does not have it.
Now what is the difference between Union Square east and west?
Also comments on bidding in Embarcado area?

No Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf or Embarcadero hotel has free parking. Union Square West is close to the Tenderloin=a less than lovely area of SF (think skid row with drug dealers/hookers). Union Square East is better. Better yet is the Embarcadero.

BTW are you driving to SF in your own car or a rental? If it's a rental, you might be better served dropping it off and going without a car for your SF stay. There is really no need for a visitor to have a car in the City.

Although there are parts of the city that are more easily accessed with a car than without - such as Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park and Land's End. Not that it's not possible without a car, just easier with one.

I agree that Embarcadero is best, followed by Union Square East.

Hey sf--how do you like the rain? Bizarre isn't it? I feel so sorry for the tourists who only have a couple of days here, like the people on the cruise ship that docked this am.

I can see the cruise ship from my office! I am very very annoyed at this weather, and thankful that Sunday was beautiful and this weekend is expected to be sunny and hot!

It's raining in late June in San Francisco? How strange...we lived in the Bay Area for over 5 years and I remember summer rain only once (summer 1986 or 87?). Weird indeed!

This may be only the 2nd or 3rd time we've experienced rain in summer here since 1973!!

One place that regularly gets high marks and provides free parking is the Columbus Motor Inn in North Beach. Otherwise there are a number of hotels and motels along Lombard Avenue in the northern part of the city (between Union Street and Clement) with free parking as well.
