Texas beaches are not like those in South Florida or the Caribbean. The water is not crystal blue and the sand is not white because of the offshore oil in the Gulf of Mexico. In the summertime, they tend to be very crowded with families and young folks, and are definitely not quiet. In July, the mosquitos are quite bad on the beach,a nd it's also extremely hot! Also, San Antonio is a bit of a drive (2-3 hours) from the beach. If you're still interested, the nearest beach to SA is Corpus Christi, and it is one of the nicer ones in the state. Other nice ones are Port Aransas, and South Padre Island.

Instead of going to the beach, how about going to the Hill Country? The countryside around San Antonio is very well known among Texans for its beauty, and there are some very nice resorts that truly help you "get away from it all"!!!
The Hyatt Hill Country is very nice- it has 6 restaurants, 3 golf courses, and a huge pool. It is in the country, and offers lots of recreation. Website: http://guadalupe-river-ranch.com/

Good Luck! texas is a wonderful place, and the Hill Country is my favorite part!!

Agree with above poster--Texas beaches are dirty and full of big-bellied beer guzzling, trash throwing nasties during the summer. If you must go, then try Rockport--a little north of Corpus. It is about as charming as Texas beach towns get. But to get wet in summer, I would recommend going tubing on the Frio or other pretty rivers in hill country. Where to stay? Our favorite place was Foxfire Cabins in Utopia (or nearby). They are very sweet, with antiques, fireplaces, etc. We also enjoyed the Mayan Dude Ranch (right on a river), and the Flying L Dude Ranch. Both of these are in Bandera. Have fun and take sun screen.

If we have had rain, riding the rapids on the Guadalupe is fun & close to SA. Otherwise, go to South Padre. You will want to fly as it is a long trip. You can go into Mexico or just sit around some nice condo areas. Try www.traveltex.com or southpadre.com (or org I can't remember). Corpus is ok and just 3 hours drive from SA.

Great notes on whether to go to the beach or not. Like Andre, I am heading to San A. for a conference in Jan, but looking for somewhere romantic for a week's honeymoon afterward.

Do your suggestions still stand for January, or are there other places of interest I should go?

Su
