Nice but inexpensive hotels in NYC
I am planning a trip to NYC in June. I am wanting to find a nice but inexpensive hotel to stay in for the week. There will be 3 of us. Any help would be much appreciated.
What do you consider inexpensive? Do you have a particular area in mind?
Any particular location in NYC>
We would like to stay in the Manhattan area, maybe near the theatre district, although we are flexible. Inexpensive to me is $100-140 a night.
Try priceline. Check out Biddingfor travel.com for hints on using priceline. you can get a good deal for about $100.
Linda, the Manhattan area is an awfully big area. The theatre section is Midtown West in Priceline lingo. I got a four star hotel for March for $90 per night. The only problem with NYC hotels is that you may not have two double beds, so beware!
If you're willing to go a bit higher, My family stayed in a suite at the Broadway Inn (www.broadwayinn.com) for $189 last weekend. Included parking and breakfast. We thought it was just right.
Liz--I've looked at Broadway Inn on their web site and thought it looked nice. But the prices they quoted for a suite was around $250. If I could get one for $189, that would be great, since it includes breakfast. How did you get that rate?
"Manhattan area"? Huh........Manhattan and NYC are one and the same. NYC IS the island of Manhattan.
It might be the time of year. We got that price in January.
Correction: Manhattan is one of the FIVE boroughs of New York City, the others being Queens, Brooklyn, da Bronx, and Staten Island. So before you correct someone, find out if you're right! NYC is NOT just the island of Manhattan!
I know a lot of people are happy with Priceline, but personally I'm not sure that's the best route for everyone, including Linda who needs accomodations for 3, which Priceline can't guarantee, or others who just want to know the specific hotel before they go.

Linda, I don't have much experience with NYC hotels since I live here, but the occasional relative who doesn't elect to camp out on my living room sofa has been content with the Quality Hotel (94th street near Broadway) the Comfort Inn (71st near CPW)(seen some really cheap rates there recently--like $79, but that's for January and February) , and a friend of a friend has stayed (for a week or more) at Hayden Hall, on w. 79th street. All 3 are located in Manhattan, in the residential neighborhood of the Upper West Side. It is about a 10-15 subway ride to the theater district, but the hotels are generally less expensive (and less fancy)because of the location.

June is a more expensive time of the year than now, so if you hear of good rates from others, keep in mind that the rates from now to then could differ by 30-40%!
What about the Pennsylvania Hotel (remember the song Pennsylvania 6500? This is the place!!!)...rates are under $100.00 . It is an old historic hotel.
Hotel Pennsylvania is a dump. Yeah, they always have $99 rates, but it seems like EVERYONE on this board who's ever stayed there has negative things to say about it...
Hi,
Do investigate further before you stay at the PA hotel. There has been a lot of postings here stating that it is shabby and dirty. I would keep looking or take some of the other suggestions here.
This is helpful so far. Any other suggestions out there?
Go to Starwood Hotels for great prices.
Can anyone tell me anything about the Herald Square?
Linda, rather than hanging out on this forum, you should be shopping like the dickens all over the web. When you see a price you like, then check out the reviews for that hotel on the travel boards before booking. "Nice but inexpensive" is a DREAM in NYC unless you're willing to do your homework and shop like crazy. We're staying in a 4-1/2 star in June for $143/night. But, I booked this on the web months ago and the same place is now coming up for more than double that price.
Linda, wherever you stay, make sure there are enuf beds for 3. many NYC doubles are simply a double bed in a room. Try The Roosevelt, a centrally located hotel in Midtown. They are in the Entertainment Book and pop up in all sorts of web sites for hotels. Its across the street from Grand Central Station and you can walk almost anywhere from there (well you need a subway to lower Manhattan). I wish I could get a commission for everytime I recommend this hotel.
The Roosevelt is a very nice, very accommodating hotel that has plenty of 2 double bed rooms. Great location too.
Dear huh,
please expound on what sites and what travel boards I am new to this and would appreciare any help
Brian,
Sometimes "posters" loose site of what this forum is all about and instead of offering sound advice, they put-down other travelers. We are all here to help each other so don't be put off by those who don't have anything nice to say. Anyway, look at the rant & raves section of Fodors.com to see reviews of hotels submitted by folks who have stayed at them, and look at Quickbook.com to get an idea of hotel descriptions and prices. These are just 2 suggestions, I'm sure someone else can offer a few other good sites.

The recently renovated Edison Hotel, in the theater district, is nice and centrally located. The hotel is moderately priced (under $200) and you might find an internet special. Whichever hotel you choose, if you're planning to stay for a week, ask for an extended stay discount. Although hotels don't advertise that type of deal, most hotels will offer it upon request. Good luck!

I find that Expedia has better rates, but if you also check on Travelocity, you can read the reviews of guests who have stayed there.
Give www.HotelKingdom.com a try. They guaranteed to have the lowest prices around.

I'd booked Bentley (a 4 star hotel) for $113 tax included for 2/23. If you go to other sites, the rate now if $179 before taxes.

Good luck.
I've seen good prices on www.playbill.com, however they're usually on short notice and didn't see anything posted for June. Does anyone have experience with using this website?
Does anyone know anything about Park Central Hotel or Milford Plaza??
I can second the recommendation for the Broadway B&B. Stayed there in October. Very clean, decent furnishings, room was the size of a closet however. Cheap rates at that time, but I see they have gone way up for spring and summer. The staff was charming and helpful and the room was very quiet.

I stayed at the Wyndham in August and was not pleased. It's gone beyond "old-world charm" and has entered "shabby and stained." The staff bordered on rude.
After reading so much about the Milford Plaza I hesitated to go there, but a friend highly recommended it for its location. Two weeks ago we went and I was pleasantly surprised. It looked renovated, was very small with 2 twin beds, and was clean except when I looked under the bed to see if we had forgotten anything. I usually like three star AAA motels but this was fine. The staff was efficient and pleasant, the lobby was real nice, and it was close to Broadway shows and Gray Line tours and the visitor's center, and the other clientele looked very nice -- alot of airline people.

I would definitely stay there again.

Last December, we scored a room with two double beds at the Madison (on Madison Ave, naturally) for $85, including four breakfast tokens to the Greasy Spoon next door. The hotel is okay, the area is good, and while it may not be the cheapest in town, it will probably give you what you want. Ring them direct. Good luck!
After writing the above, I decided to check out the rates for the Madison on their own website.... they still offer family rooms at their "Stand Up for New York" rate of $88. Address is Madison and East 27th St, so you're almost at Macy's and the Empire State.
