Niagara Falls.
 

Next month we are meeting cousins in Syracuse and driving to Niagara Falls for an overnight visit.

We will take the Maid of the Mist boat ride.

One cousin has trouble walking for any distance.

Can you recommend hotels on the Canadian side that are decent at moderate price-less than $175 a night?

And can you recommend a few restaurants on the Canadian side? We eat everything.

I would recommend that you stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake rather than at the Falls, since the food options there are awful. The first time we went through we stayed at a Marriott overlooking the falls. Not sure of the price. The second time we we went straight through to NotL. NotL is one of those tasteful Victorian resort towns selling a lot of stuff you'd never buy elsewhere but does have a few pubs and such with decent grub. We ate at The Old Angel Pub, which had, as I said, decent grub, but there may be better available. At the falls themselves you will find only dreadful chain restaurants.

Maid of the Mist is on the US side. On the Canadian side, it is Hornblower. Different ships, same tour.

You don't provide any info on the cousin with mobility issues - make sure s/he knows how wet the passengers - and the decks f the ship become on the Maid of the Mist or similar before boarding.

(A work colleague of mine did not realize that she would be drenched by the mist and wanted to sue the ship operator for ruining her expensive pants.)

I think they are aware of getting wet. Fortunately his mobility issues have nothing to do with wetting his pants. (that is a joke.)

NOTL is only about 15-20 minutes from Niagara Falls, but I think the hotels are pricier there than near the Falls. You could go to NOTL for a few hours and enjoy the pretty flowers and a nice meal. Maid of the Mist is great!

Another vote for NOTL. What makes the rooms "pricey" (depending on your definition of that term) is the Shaw Festival which takes place over the summer.

The so-called "downtown" area is lovely if for nothing else than a walk around as it is beautifully maintained with landscaping, flowers, etc.

Also the drive up the Niagara Parkway is pleasant, too.

We stayed near the Falls and went to eat in Niagara on the Lake. I liked staying near the falls because they are look so beautiful lit up in all the colors after dark.

Just this afternoon I heard an advertisement on the radio for discounted rooms are various hotels in Niagara On the Lake. You may luck out on the cost.

Although I prefer NOTL, hotels, restaurants, etc are older and may be an issue for your friend with mobility issues.

Our hotel of choice in NOTL is The Moffat Inn.

It seems that the hotels/inns closest to the lake are booked already. As it one night a few extra bucks will not make a difference.

We found what seems like a decent place called Via Veneto in NOTL that is on one floor. Anyone familiar with it?

Everyone is an experienced international traveler and we understand the vagaries and limitations of being a tourist in a tourist area at the height of tourist season.

The only "issue" with those several hotels which overlook the lake would be the walk from them TO the rest of the central downtown area. It wouldn't be considered "that" far by most folks but for someone with any sort of mobility issues it might be.
The Via Veneto is a B+B as I recall and look it up on GoogleMaps...the so-called "central area" of downtown is on Queen/Picton Street for the most part from about Wellington to Simcoe.

You can judge from the Veneto's placement as to how far you'd need to walk BUT you can always drive and nickel the meters, too.

woohoo! you pulled the trigger! It's been 20 years since my last visit to Niagra Falls. Wouldn't mind another visit one of these days.

Your B&B location will require you to drive a bit into the village for your cousin... bring the handicap tag if he has one... Tredwell in the village, and Trius at Hillenbrand are great high end meals...

English pub is Olde Angel Inn, Irish pub is The Harp, and the Niagara on the Lake Golf course restaurant is good comfort food... there are 30 other options if you need them...

In Niagara Falls, the Keg is a steakhouse with a Falls view...
