Niagara / Buffalo
 

Hi! I just posted about NYC, but wanted to list this separately :)<BR><BR>My husband and I will be starting our 10-day trip out in Niagara/Buffalo area. Just looking for must-sees in this area, and some restaurant suggestions.<BR><BR>So far, our only 'must-sees' are:<BR><BR>Maid in the Mist<BR>Anchor Bar - Yummy Wings!<BR><BR>We are also considering driving over to Niagara on the Lake in Canada.<BR><BR>Any help you can offer will be appreciated!!!!!<BR><BR>Thanks!<BR>

Oh! I forgot to say that we will be arriving on Saturday evening (plane lands at 4pm) and plan to stay in this area through Monday at lunchtime!<BR><BR>Thanks again!

I think that Niagara on the Lake is a must do. A lovely English town and the Shaw theatre there is superb. In the spring-summer, the gardens are lovely. I haven't been recently enough to give restaurant suggestions.

You have to go to the Canadian side and stay on Clifton Hill right smack dab in the middle of the touist area. Tacky? Sure is, but that's the fun part of it.<BR><BR>I'm sure others will disagree, but it is pretty neat and you are still close to everything. Most everyhting is walking distance or by a bus pass for the day that hits all the major attractions.<BR>Have fun,<BR>Duane

We just went last summer for the first time and yes go to Niagara on the Lake looked like alot of fun and beautiful little town. Also he's right about Clifton Hill you should go once and see what is there.... don't waste your money just walk and view the sight of it all .. ;)<BR><BR>There was a walk down the American side of the falls.. that looked like it would be very interesting and up close... wish we had done that. We did the walk behind the falls and it was &quot;ok&quot; nothing to brag about.

We've stayed at the Fallsview Marriott, and it was very nice. Hope you have good weather. When we were there, we should have had a great view of the falls, but there was heavy fog. It arrived as we checked in, and of course, it blew off shortly after we checked out. We were only there for the one night, so we were never able to enjoy the view.<BR><BR>While the Canadian side is prettier, and we also enjoyed Niagara on the Lake, if you are heading over to the New York side, do stop in the park just over the bridge. The views of the falls from there are great, and there is a spot that you can view them from, while you are right between them. Also, there is a tram ride that gives an interesting tour, which allows on/off stops at each. We enjoyed this because of the narrative. We learned about Three Sisters island, and some local history. Speaking of Three Sisters island, that is an impressive spot to view the power of the river from. <BR><BR>Also in Buffalo, there is a Frank Lloyd Wright house that's being restored,and there are tours on specific days/times. Another interesting spot, if you enjoy history, is the house where Teddy Roosevelt took the oath of office in 1901.

I'm confused as to when your trip is, is it Saturday, as in today 3/1? If it is then my advice may be alittle late. First of all, the Maid of the Mist won't be running at this time of the year. Also, I would not recommend the Anchor Bar even though it is the original chicken wing restaurant. It's in a terrible part of town and has a &quot;seedy, dirty&quot; feel to it. There are scores of other restaurants that serve great wings, including most of the bar type restaurants such as Jimmy Macs and Coles which are on Elmwood Ave. and Duffs which is in suburban Amherst. If you're looking for other dining options in Buffalo post again with what you're looking for as Buffalo has plenty of great restaurants.

You are trying to pack in a lot of sightseeing into a very small time frame. I would skip Niagara on the Lake. You'll be seeing plenty of beautiful, old, historical towns in your travels across New York State (I read your other post). You are really going to need one full day Sunday to see and do everything in Niagara Falls.<BR><BR>I highly suggest that you view the Falls from both sides. On the American side, you can stand next to the water right where it goes over. It is incredible. Also, you can get very close to the upper rapids. On the Canadian side, you get a panoramic, but somewhat distant view. Besides the Maid of the Mist, I would also suggest the walkway/elevator down to the lower Niagara River to view the rapids. I believe these rapids are known to be the strongest in the world. Truly incredible to see and somewhat overlooked by tourists. There is also a museum (don't know the name of it) that houses some of the barrels that people have gone over the Falls in and their stories. <BR><BR>Monday might be a good time have lunch at the Anchor Bar before you head to the Finger Lakes. If you think you'd like to squeeze in a little time for Buffalo (besides wing eating), let me know and I'll give you some suggestions. Have a great time.<BR><BR>

The museum with the barrels is at the IMAX theater, which is very near the Marriott hotel. The barrels and stories are very interesting. The theater also has a movie history of Niagara Falls but we didn't think it was worth the money. You can see the barrels in the theater lobby without buying tickets to the movie.
