NH - Great North Woods
 

Any recommendations about where to stay in northern New Hampshire? This will be our first visit to New England. No kids on the trip. I found online the Timberland Lodge and Cabins and it looks good for a relaxing trip enjoying the wilderness. Any advice on the NH or Vermont areas is welcome. Thanks.

When are you going? Makes a difference if during ski season.<BR>Lake Winnipisaki area is nice. Try Ware's Beach<BR>If in late spring or summer can camp off of Kangamangus Hwy.<BR>I like North Conway but it's a little touristy

If you're talking about the Timberland Lodge on Back Lake in Pittsburg NH, you're just about on the Canadian border and this is FAR north. My husband and son enjoyed the lake and the lodge but you won't be near anything else in New England. You're even pretty far north of the mountains. It will be quiet and depending on the time of year, there will be great fishing. For hiking and great views, you might be happier with something in the White Mountains which are just a short drive from Lake Winnipesaukee. The Lake is very crowded during the summer. I've heard some good reports about Philips Brook, a new wilderness area near Berlin where you can stay in yurts. In winter it is popular with dog mushers. If you just want to read, relax, enjoy the lake, Timberland will be fine.

How about the Balsams (www.thebalsams.com)The BALSAMS an historic (Old style)resort high in NH White Mountains and in the Great North Woods.<BR><BR>It is all inclusive - Great if you enjoy outdoor activities as they are included in the price. BUT this is not like any other all inclusive acommodation.<BR><BR>Very secluded - So fits your description of 'enjoying the wilderness'<BR>A great way to get back to nature without going too basic.

The balsams is definitely the best place to stay if you are conidering going so far north. As xxx said its a historic, grand hotel with excellent food and lots of things to do. The only down side is that it is outrageously expensive, even moreso than the Mt. washington Hotel
