NEXTELS IN HAWAII???

Help--will our Nextels work in Hawaii?? Leaving in 6 days(!!!!!) and just curious!!

Maggi Oct 13th, 2004 05:09 AM

Call Nextel. Before we left we called T-Mobile and asked them. We brought our phone with us and it worked fine. We even e-mailed photos back home with it. It worked better from Oahu than Kauai. On Kauai we had to be closer to more populated areas, like Poipu.

Believe me it works. My husband kept getting calls from his office. Even at Waipio Valley and the Volcano. So does Verizon.

Thanks for the help!!! I kind of (sort of) want to be available for work. Just to make sure things are okay while I'm gone. Sad, isn't it???

In my experience all US cellular services work in Hawaii, alhtough you will be roaming. Also, in my expierence, calling your provider does not always give you right answer. My mother called Cingular before she came to visit and she was told her phone would not work here. This is quite odd, since I have been using Cingular service in Maui ever since my previous provider was swallowed up by Cingular. My mother was both pleased and dismayed when her phone worked here. She called to switch to a nation plan before her trip, but didn't bother to make the change when the Cingular CSR told her there was no use in doing so, since her phone would not work here anyway.

There are Nextel stores in Hawaii; they provide service here.

I should have asked this: Will the 2-way reach to the mainland?? I don't worry about the roaming, but why make a call if I can just "chirp" someone?? I have the nationwide plan, but do not know if it will work there.

rb_travelerxATyahoo Oct 14th, 2004 07:18 AM

Make the call, instead of "chirping" someone, because many of us detest the chirps and being forced to be a participant in BOTH sides of your conversations.

I apologize if you are one of the few who make them only in the privacy of your home or car, but many Nextel users don't ... like the jerk who I swear followed me up & down aisles at the supermarket this morning.

rb-I know what you mean!!! I have one & use it all the time, and it gets real annoying in a store or restaurant when you have to listen to everyone else's!! Thanks for the heads up!!!

The answer to your question about the chirp is yes. It works if you have to use it.

here_today_gone2Maui --- question for you...

Are you still using Cingular as your cell phone provider? We are just re-confirming with you, a local, that Cingular has service on Maui.

Thanks for your help, once again!

Yes, still with Cingular. Even before Cingular acquired AT&T, I had service here, roaming on AT&T and T-Mobile.
