Newport, RI - what area to stay in?

Will be spending a couple of days in Newport RI in September and would like recommendations on whether to stay in the historic dist/wharf area or somewhere along the Cliff Walk. Thanks!

I'd stay in town, since there's so much more to do there. Parking is tight, and by staying there you automatically have a spot!

Suzy is absolutely correct.

I frequent Newport quite often and highly recommend the Mill Street Inn (they have a web site which I believe is www.millstreetinn.com -- I think). We usually request Room 212 which is a duplex and has a really lovely outdoor deck where you can enjoy a bottle of wine and watch the sunset over the harbor (can you tell I really like it? lol). It's very centrally located (on Mill Street right off Thames) and you can walk to everything. If you want to splurge (ALOT), try the Castle Hill Inn which is located on Ocean Drive and not walkable to town (I believe their website is www.castlehillinn.com).

And I would recommend the Francis Malbone House on Thames Street. I think they have a website.
