Newport, RI Trip Questions
Hubby and I are going to Newport, RI for 3 days next month. Here's what I have planned to do while we're there (Trip to Breakers Mansion, The Mooring Restaurant, Scales and Shells and Flo's Clam Shack). Does this sound like fun? Can you suggest any other must do's while we're there --truly seeking some fantastic seafood restaurants. Thanks!

Flo's closes after the New Year until March, so you'll have to pick another spot.
The other places you mentioned are good for seafood though, the Mooring being the nicer. If you catch a mild day, or can bear the temps, the Cliff Walk is nice. Also a drive around Ocean Ave is great for the scenery: www.cliffwalk.com www.tenmiledrive.com Lots of fun exploring the other restaurants and shops along the wharfs and Thames Street. |
We were in Newport in April and just loved the town. We ate at the Mooring one night and it was very nice-try to get a table by the water and watch the sunset-beautiful. We were there three days and walked on the Cliff Walk everyday-it is great. Hope you have a good time on your trip.

Thank you both and now, hubby and I are really looking forward to our trip!

Agree that the Cliff Walk is great, and much of it can be accessed easily by anyone. Just be aware that the southern portion of it is in rough, primitive condition and best only for the physically sturdy.

My husband and I were in Newport in November and one of the places we went is the Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Theater. This was a lot of fun. I believe they're open year-round. It's a buffet dinner, the play, and then a cabaret show after the play. We both really enjoyed it. We're close to 50 and were definitely in the younger age group. We would definitely go back. There is not much night-life that we found off-season.

Sorry, not a fan of Scales and Shells at all. And I have great fried and horrid fried at Flo's so always suggest ordering one platter to test before ordering more.
Bundle up and walk the full cliff walk if weather permits. Enjoy the bare trees in all their glory and the architecture. |
You might consider a meal or 2 at Castle Hill

You didn't specify the dates that you will be in town but I know that Scales and Shells is closed for winter vacation until approx Jan 21.
I am not a fan of Flo's as stated by a previous poster their food is not consistent. The Moorings is great, as well as Castle Hill but of course, both are pricey. Save the Bay sponsors short boat trips to view the winter seals. Check out "savethebay.org" Great ocean watching at any spot on the drive, or take a drive over to Beavertail litehouse on nearby Jamestown. If you go to Jamestown, great seafood at Chopmist Charlie's, and it's particularly reasonable. Have you checked "gonewport.org" fopr upcoming events? Have a great weekend! |
Check out some of the other mansions. Breakers was not my favorite of the ones I've visited; Chateau-sur-Mer is the one that sticks in my mind the most.

rhode island is a pretty cool place for such a small state
|
If the Mansions are opened. definately check them out. I love the Breakers.

If you want a Flo's type place, try Anthony's in Middletown. It's a retail fish market and a very basic (as far as decor/atmosphere) restaurant with great seafood. We go to Middletown every other year and that's the first place we head.
