Newport RI sailing
We will be in Newport in August for just a few days with our 16 year old son; would love for him to have a half day sailing class with something along the lines of a Sunfish - just a small taste of sailing. Can anyone help with that?

you could try contacting someone at sailnewport.org - the lessons I know of are for longer periods, but there must be somewhere that rents and offers lessons for 1/2 day one would think in a harbor/vacation area - they may be able to recommend, but I think most of their programs are a week or longer, but they might help you.

peggionthego - I spoke w/ a friend of mine who lives and sails in newport and asked him for referrals - he asked has he sailed before at all and would you have a car if it meant driving 20 minutes to get to a place - so let me know.

Take a look at the offerings under sailing at "www.gonewport.com". Not cheap, but it sounds like fun!

Sail Newport has private lessons/sails available anytime...
from their website:
"Private Instruction
We also offer private instruction, with certified instructors, for all skill levels ages 12 and older. Private lessons provide a one-on-one experience as a refresher, confidence builder, or introduction to the sport of sailing.
Call the Dock Office for details, questions or reservations: 401-849-8385. Or free to email the Program Director, Kim Hapgood at [email protected]"
They're very good.

My Newport sailing friend got back to me - he says Sail Newport for shorter lessons is great - JWorld has 2 day weekend courses if he is really into learning, but that as a taste Sail Newport is great and sounds more like what he is looking for.
