NEWPORT, RI Mansion/Cliffwalk
 

Driving from New York to Boston, we will make an afternoon stop in Newport (from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm)and like to take at least one tour of a mansion. ¿It is possible? ¿What about taking the cliff walk also? ¿Do I need to buy the ticket in advance or I can wait until I get there? Please HELP!!!!!!!!

It is not necessary to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased at any of the houses. We went a number of years ago for the Christmas display and chose to purchase our tickets (for viewing 3 homes) that day just in case the weatherman was wrong. It was my impression then that the cliff walk is free and can be accessed from several points. However, doing that walk in Dec. wasn't part of our plans, so you should check out the web site below.

I was in Newport earlier this month - what a great place to walk around and peoplewatch. I bought tickets for the mansions at the Visitor Center, but you can also get them at the mansions. If you plan to drive to the mansion and take the Cliff Walk back, you will need to get your car later. A better idea might be to leave you car in town, take either a trolley or a van (going to Doris Duke's house, Rough Point) and then walk back to town via the Cliff Walk. If you could only see 1 mansion, make it the Breakers. I saw Rough Point, Breakers and Rosecliff. If you go to the Breakers, you can access the Cliff Walk (free)around the corner and take it back into town. It's a long walk, but really nice. If you plan to get something to eat in town, I recommend The Mooring, right on the water - great seafood and good service. But there are lots of good places to eat. Just taking a stroll down Thames Street is fun as well.Enjoy your time in Newport - you will want to go back.

Great advice everyone! I am already enjoying the trip. Unfortunatedly there is not more time to spend in Newport.

If you park your car at one end of the cliff walk and walk to the other end, is there a trolley or something to take you back to where you car is?

The Yellow Trolley line runs all along Bellvue/Cliff Walk area.....check out

It's technically called the #67 but it's a trolley. There is also a trolley that runs from the Visitors Center (Orange Line) to the Beaches, but has a stop at the start of the Cliff Walk on Memorial Boulevard.
