Newport, RI lodging
 

Hi-
My wife and I are planning to go to Newport, RI at the end of March for 3 days. I've looked at many places to stay but would like some opinions. Any on the following: Almondy Inn; Castle Hill Inn; Artful Lodger; Sanford Covell Villa; or Sarah Kendall House? Thanks!

Try the Legendary Inns of Newport - 3 inns owned by the same people. Outstanding B & B - I've stayed at two of the three. Go to their website - I think they have a special for 30 or 40% off a night through the end of March. Not cheap, but very nice!! I haven't stayed at any of the others.

I'm with hockeymom. My husband and I stayed at the Cliffside Inn. Great location if you intend to walk the Cliffwalk and go see the mansions. It's a drive to downtown Newport, though. Not sure what happened to the people who have the most recent posts on this place in the Hotels for Newport listings - our service was wonderful and the afternoon tea is AMAZING!

We visited the Castle Hill Inn during our stay and it looks fantastic. If we go back to Newport, we're planning on staying there (not that we wouldn't stay at Cliffside - we just like to try different things).

Evenin', check out Attwater Villa in Newport, stayed there for anniversary, excellent atmosphere, breakfast and coffee to die for; host knows Newport like the back of his hand; and privacy.

I'm from Newport ans I'd have to say that Castle Hill is the nicest of the ones you mention. Away from the downtown area but beautiful setting. Right on the ocean and quiet.

The Other B&B's you mentioned are also nice, Artful Lodger and Almondy Inn are located in the "Historic Hill" section and are real close to the downtown area....actually they're IN the downtown area.

Sarah Kendall and the Covell Villa are in the quieter "Point" section...short walk to downtown but not as far out as Castle Hill. (Castle Hill you would definitely have to drive or take a cab)

The other suggestions that people gave are also nice....i guess it all depends on which sort of setting you are looking for.

Thanks for all the info everyone. Castle Hill seems to be the front runner, but it's a tough choice! Too many nice places to stay!

We stayed at the Castle Hill Inn, Novemer 2003. I can't say enough wonderful things about the staff, the professionalism and the 3:00 PM tea (and tea hostess!) Dinner, a little dispappointing one night (the Cheft not the staff). We stayed in the Tourret Suite, it was well worth the extra money (we were in town for 4 days)
need restaurant suggestions? Along with this site (do a Newport search, also go to egullet.com (New England).

Just an FYI...double check Castle Hill Inn. I have a friend who works there and he said it is closed for a month (maybe renovations). I don't know if they mean just February or longer. Should be fine but just in case...

I can vouch also for Cliffside Inn. We stayed in the smallest (read: most inexpensive) room but took a tour of the other rooms. They are spectacular. Also, the location is great for walking.

My in-laws stayed at the Francis Malbone (sp?) right on the main street in downtown and loved it there.
