Newport, Rhode Island and Kennebunkport, Maine
 

We will be staying in Kennebunkport, Maine and Newport, Rhode Island this summer, can anyone suggest things to do, restaurants, and places in between to visit. This is our first trip to New England, and we don't have a clue, except to eat lobster and watch whales. Help!!!!!

If you are going to Newport, you have to tour the fabulous Newport Mansions. Newport was THE place for the fabulously wealthy in the early 1900's, and there are many great mansions open for tours. You can find out more about them at www.NewportMansions.org. Hope you have a great time!

Newport is a great little city, at all times of the year, but especially in summer. Do you like the beach? Second Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in New England. You can take a walk on Cliff Walk, which is behind all of the mansions on Bellevue Ave. You will walk along the ocean and you can view all of the beautiful mansions and their gardens. The Cliff Walk is lined with wild roses and it sits just above the rocky coastline. It was used in several movies, the last famous one being The Great Gatsby. The Tennis Hall of Fame on Bellevue Ave. is popular with tennis buffs for its beautiful grass courts. Ten Mile Drive starts at the eastern end of Bellevue Ave, and will carry you along the coastline, past gorgeous homes, including Hammersmith Farm, family home of Jackie Kennedy. Many of these mansions can be toured. Castle Hill Hotel is on the drive and is a great choice for a nice meal with a great view. Many of the restaurants in Newport are pricey due to their location. Most folks enjoy the Black Pearl, Christies, Salas' (less expensive), and the White Horse Tavern. Travel over the Newport Bridge to the Island of Jamestown for a nice dinner or Sunday Brunch at the Bay Voyage Hotel. <BR>Sakonnet Vineyards, is located about 15 miles from Newport and you can tour the vineyard and watch the process of making wine. If you like the samples, you can purchase your favorites. This vineyard is a great place for a picnic lunch and this is encouraged. Stop at Provenders' Deli on the way to the vineyard for snacks and sandwiches. There are many quaint shops on Bellevue Ave and on Thames Street if you want to shop. My favorite is "The Runcible Spoon". There are also several art museums and shops with scenes from local artists. You can take tours of the Harbour and of the island - choices include sailboats, power boats, and passenger ferries. Day cruises out of Warren, R.I. might feature a cruise of Narragnsett Bay, or an evening dinner cruise. If you are into gambling there is Jai Ali, and the worlds largest casine is a one hour drive away in Ledyard, Conn. <BR>Hope this helps.... have fun! <BR>
