my husband and I and our 3 children aged 17, 15 and 12 will be spending 3 nights in newport this summer. Any recommendations on where to stay, interested in boutique hotels, 5 star tastes on 3 star budget!, thanks for your help :)

See if you can get a deal for the Hyatt Goat Island. Not a boutique but good amenitiies, views.

HappyTrvlr, is the Hyatt Goat Island ever lower than $469 a night (over $500 with taxes) during the summer? I've checked many times way in advance and even with AAA or senior rate that seems to be the lowest I ever find. And that's for just two people, the OP is looking for 5 people on a 3 star budget!

For less expensive options, you might want to look at some of the nearby towns like Middletown, Swansea, Warwick etc.

Newport is one of my favorite placess to visit, but you have to go really off season to get deals. In the summer, even the chain hotels (Hampton Inn, Hoilday Inn Express) in Middletown go for $200-$300 on weekends, and you'd need 2 rooms or a higher priced suite for 5 people. Warwick is not practical if you plan on going to Newport each day (I've tried that) but could be economical if you want a base to go to other areas too. But almost all the hotels there are chains.

So what are you willing to compromise on? Weekdays are usually cheaper, but still not cheap. How much are you willing to spend?

There are more b&bs and inns than boutique hotels. What aspect of a boutique hotel do you like? Do you just mean not a cookie cutter chain? How does this place look to you?

I've only stayed in the off season (when it was actually cheap) but the location is good, right across the street from a beach and close to one end of the Cliff Walk. There are a few modest priced restaurants within walking distance, and it's easy to drive anywhere. Nice indoor pool too, and there are some larger suites with a kitchen that could really be handy.
Still not cheap, but maybe it's closer to what you want?

Afraid you are more likely to get three star hotels at five star rates. Rethink or re-budget.

Since there are 5 of you, you might try looking on www.airbnb.com, where you could rent an apartment for a few days. This site was started by several graduates from the RI School of Design, and is now an international success.
