Newport: Restaurants & Recreation
My husband and I are staying in Newport for 2 nights in early Oct and would like some really good restaurant recommendations...we looked on-line at 22bowens, The West Deck and The Mooring? Any opinions or other recommendations?
Also, for activities: what are some things that we should not miss? We would like to see mansions and go out on a sailboat tour. Anything advice? Thank you! |
Here's a list of some of the ones I love and/or like:
Upscale or somewhat Upscale: Restaurant Bouchard 505 Thames Street Newport RI (401)846-0123 (the food here is FANTASTIC; a bit pricey.) Castle Hill Inn & Resort 590 Ocean Drive Newport RI (888)466-1355 (love their Sunday brunch as well .... very old world and elegant and the view is great.) Cheeky Monkey Café 14 Perry Mill Wharf Newport, RI (401)845-9494 (Excellent service and good food). White Horse Tavern Marlborough and Farewell Sts., Newport, RI, USA Phone: 401/849-3600 Asterisk & Obelisk 599 Thames Street Newport RI (401)841-8833 (Interesting, good food with a fusion twist) Clarke Cooke House Bannister's Wharf Newport RI (401)849-2900 (fun atmosphere -- sit on the main (Wharf) level). Black Pearl Bowen's Wharf Newport RI (401)846-5264 (Fun atmosphere and good food.) Casual Places The Mooring Restaurant Sayer's Wharf Newport RI (401)846-2260 (the chilled lobster claws here great!! Right on the water.) Rhode Island Quahog Company 250 Thames Street Newport(401)848-2330 The Landing Restaurant & Bar 30 Bowen's Wharf Middletown (401)847-4514 |
Within "Upscale", I left out Spiced Pear at the Chanler. Excellent!

I'll add Scales and Shells for excellent seafood and the Red Parrot for more casual dining.

To add to Michelle's list:
Brick Alley, Red Parrot, Fifth Element Rhumbline, A&O Fish House, H20... Early October there will still be some boats offering sailings. Walk the Cliff Walk if the weather is nice...drive along Ocean Drive. |
Had an unbelievably great meal at Clarke Cooke House last week.
The "Candy Store" area downstairs has a more causal feel and menu, but upstairs on "the Porch" is elegant and beautiful. Over looks the harbor and is delicious but expensive, it's a meal to splurge on. The Ravioli of Lobster and Wild Mushroom with leeks, morels, and beurre de champignon was one of the best first courses I have ever eaten! |
