Newport, Or

Anything going on for Labor Day weekend? Will be there from Sept 1-8. Anything that we should see besides the ocean and go whales watching?

the newsport aquarium is very famous and a real highlight on the coast to see. so what if the "free willy" killer whale is no longer there? it's still a great treat to see the rest that is there. the nearby hatfield marine center is also interesting.

Tim is right. The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is a must see. I think they've replaced Keiko with sharks.

Keiko's old digs redone now.
After Keiko the orca left the aquarium for the open sea, his former habitat was renovated. Now it houses the underwater passage that connects three ocean habitats and features more than 5,000 sea creatures.

On your undersea stroll, you first enter the "Orford Reef," where waves make the kelp forest sway in the current, and sea stars and giant green anemones dot the boulders.

You then tour "Halibut Flats," home to Pacific cod and halibut, California bat rays, sturgeon, and rockfish. At the end of your journey, the "Open Sea" lures you with schools of soupfin, leopard sharks, and spiny dogfish sharks, as well as mackerel, bass, and chinook salmon.

Yahoo has just posted a photo of the tunnel running through the shark tank at

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/p/ap/20...keiko_3s7.html
