Newport, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard

Hi,
My husband and I are thinking of traveling to Newport, MVineyard, and Nantucket in mid May.
We have never been there before and would like ay information, suggestions on what to do, where to stay etc. Also, it looks like the average temperatures are in the 60's and I'm wondering if it is too cool and rainy to enjoy it here this time of year.
We don't mind staying in a couple different locations over an eight day period.
We love to bum around daily and enjoy good food, antiquing, some of the history and relaxing some too.
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

In New England there are no absolutes on weather. This year is not typical, but it was 70 earlier this week, snow is expected Sunday thru Monday and it is projected to be in the 60's by the end of next week.

That said spring can be great. It will probably be a bit cooler near the shore since the ocean will not have warmed up much.

There are plenty of places to do the things you want to do lots of antiquing, history and good food in the area.

You might even luck out with slightly less expensive lodging in May.

The weather has a great chance of being cool, damp and in some areas foggy. Which can be lovely, but you will have to bundle up. No suntanning on the beach. But perhaps testing out the new fleet every year jeeps on Nantucket. Just don't get stuck in the sand! Twice I've been the first to bring a new member of the fleet onto the sand.

The commute will be difficult time consuming and costly between locations unless you have a private jet or boat.

Much of the islands will still be locked up/preseason, but some things will be open year round, so you won't starve

Add Block Island to your list.

We have visited all areas both in Spring and Autumn. i prefer a late September visit, as the weather is usually better, and it's harvest time

Also, not sure when public transportation kicks in that time of year.

I live in Nantucket, and it is way too cool for going in the ocean until late July and for enjoying water activities before mid-June. It is likely to be foggy rather than rainy, and it will be very picturesque. It will be blooming like crazy, but the spectacular roses won't be at their prime until late June. The weather will be great for cycling and walking, but there is a whole long list of festivals and activities during this period if you like that sort of thing. You can say much the same thing about the Vineyard.

I would caution you not to come Memorial Day weekend because it begins the sailboat racing season. Some of the participants are serious sailors, others are out to party and there are lots of hangers on trying to get into parties. Many of them are trouble.

As noted above, September is best. However, you can now take a ferry from RI to MV and connect for Nantucket. My cousins did it and though it was fun. Fly into Providence and take the bus back to Providence from Hyannis. Later in the summer. Jet Blue has cheap flight from Nantucket connecting in Boston to all kinds of places.
