If you could please provide some more info, like budget range and do you all want to be in one room, and/or would you share king size or need twins, or doubles, then that would narrow it down.

Otherwise, a few to think about:
June is busy in Newport (lots of weddings and other waterfront events) so you should book soon and w/out a car would want to be near Thames/Americas Cup/etc.

If you want a place w/ 2 bedrooms, 1 or 2 baths, small kitchen, combo dining/living with a pull out couch, - one level or two level accomodaions, some w/ balconies - then I would suggest the Newport Bay Club & Hotel, on the corner of Americas Cup, next to the Newport yachting Center, can walk the entire waterfront, to the Cliff Walk, Bellevue Ave, even some mansions if you are a walker on flat land. We have enjoyed this one b/c room to spread out, be together, play cards, have snack or breakfast in room, etc - they have a set up with a hotel that has a pool you are allowed to use/ continental breakfast in morning, daily maid service.

There are some great B & B's, I like the ones run by Rick Farrick, but his contact info is at my office, but I can check back and if you are inerested repost laters.

A magnificent place, excellent location, is the Francis Malbone House, but I don't know your price range.

Others where either I or clients have stayed are: Hotel Viking, Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina, Inn on Harbor, Newport Marriott. (I'm not a travel agent, I run an annual event in Newport and some guests are not local and need lodging)

Most on a web site will show a map, so you can figure walking distance and there is a transportation center on the main street for trolley/tours/etc to places out of the main wharf area.

The only thing I would suggest is to also consider if you want quieter or noise doesn't bother you, for instance, being near Christie's Restaurant and Bar on the wharf can be loud on a weekend night even though there are sound levels they are to stay within.

Many lovely B&B's on side streets not as noisy, or do you want all amenities of a hotel.

If you are not driving in, I am assuming you are arriving at the transportation center and would walk to your hotel, so you'd want to stay on Thames/Americas Cup/ side streets?

So, how are you arriving, quieter or noisier, price range, any sharing of rooms or 4 separate, etc. Approximate age might matter, younger prefers different requirements sometimes than older.

Also, in the meantime, the www.gonewport.com web page is a good source for what is happening in and around Newport, has lodging listings, etc.

The Marriott is fine, located directly on America's Cup Avenue, you can easily walk to everything and it is a stones throw from the transportation center.
I am sure it has it's own web site if you want to see facilities, rooms, etc. But I would call sooner than later

I don't know how long you are staying, but I believe the annual Chowderfest is the first weekend in June (at Newport Yachting Center) and all their festivals are a fun take, -food, usually crafts, etc all on the harbor.

The transportation/ visitors center has all the local magazines, lists of events, special festivals, everything you need to know about newport, etc so make sure to pick those up when you arrive, but you may also want to check out the web site to see if anything special is in town while you are there that you might want to reserve ahead.

have fun wherever you end up!

Thank you. Is it a problem taking a taxi from airport to hotel? Any restaurant ideas, or sights not to be missed? We are going to tour the mansions. Where can I find information about theatre shows?

There are shuttle services to airport (Providence, I assume) or just take a cab.
Newport has a good transportation system that makes getting around the island easy. Most places are walkable.

Lodging: can be a B&B (lots of them) or hotel, large or small. All within walking distance. No car needed. (also hard to park, etc).

Besides the mansions, things to do:

The Cliff Walk is a must, all or part (it is 3.2 miles long + the walk back (or take the bus back). You can combine it with seeing the mansions. You have access to the walk in several places.

Walk along the harbor and browse shops and restaurants.

Tour the Tuoro Synagogue. The first synegogue in America. (started by the Jews from Curacao).

The International Tennis Hall of Fame (on Bellevue) is an interesting place, especially if you are tennis people.

The Beaches: Easton's Beach, also known as First Beach. (take the bus). Nice flat beach just down from the Cliff Walk (you will see it from the Cliff Walk.)

Brentons Point State Park. Right on the tip of Aquidneck Island (Newport). Great place to sit on the rocks and watch the ocean.

Go to The Castle Hill Inn. Go in the day time and sit on their lawn and have a drink (it is a bar, etc). Have dinner at sundown. Most romantic spot. Also the best restaurant in Newport (dressy, expensive).

You can take the ferry for daytrips in Providence and Block Island. Leaves from near the Transportation Center off Americas Cup blvd.

Restaurants: many very good from the pub/bar type to elegant dining. Not enough space to give a detailed description here.

Night Life: 2 in town movie theatres. Small one shows first run current movies the other "art type movies" and runs "The Great Gatsby" matinee on weekends (it was shot at one of the mansions).
There is a very active live music scene along Thames Street. (Try the Newport Blues Cafe).

You won't be bored.

You can also add to the list taking a sail on the harbor aboard the Adirondack if you would like to see the harbor, bridges, etc from a different angle. It can make for an enjoyable break from walking/touring.

The Polo Club/Farms is also about 5 miles out ofNewport, you can check their calendar on www.glenfarm.com to see if they have a match going on - that can be something different and fun to enjoy. If you tell us you like museums, architecture, shopping, history (there are some great history walking tours and historical sites/tours in Newport),

If you end up having to narrow down mansions, go to the Newport Preservation Society web page, and from their explanations on each you can choose which might interest you the mostome of the more popular ones have been Marble House, Rosecliff, Breakers and the Elms, so you get some different architecture, etc I suggest you do some looking on their web site and that will help w/ your choices. If you are doing more than one, definitely look into the passes.

There is also a nice (albeit small) wine tour aout 10 minutes out of town, they used to have a shuttle bus that would come and get you if you wanted a tour, or it is a short cab ride. Nice tour, tasting, gift shop (or, forbid, you get inclement weather)

Tell us what you like to eat/ nightlife give us a little info - jazz, pop, dancing, clubs, bars or quieter fare. Places to be alone w/ your group and chat or places to meet others your age, etc. Sometimes there are concerts in the mansions, you can check that out on the preservation web page calendar of events.

For meals, do you want casual, fancy, moderate price - are you looking for a view, any special foods, if you let us know then I am sure we can make recommendations. And tell us how many days/nights you have.

oh, if you are flying into TFGreen, they list transportation options on their web site, I am assuming one of the bus lines goes to Newport (about 40 minutes away). Depending on your hotel, they may have van pick ups, or assist you w/ private transportation or cab, depending on price.

This is a great time to visit Newport. As all of the previous posters have said, the easiest location without a car would be any of the properties on Thames Street. The Marriott is in a good spot and you can walk to a lot of the hot spots from there. Also, this side of Thames Street is not so crazy late at nite with noise from the bars. There is also a trolley system that you can ride that takes you to most of the spots on the island that you would want to see.
For restaurants, Castle Hill Inn is usually picked as the best. Most certainly, it has a drop dead gorgeous view that cannot be beat! As the previous poster said, it is expected to be dressy but I have seen people dressed fairly casual in the restaurant during the summer.Reservations are essential and request a table at the window for your group.(www.Castlehillinn.com)
On Thames Street, 22 Bowen is known for good beef and chops, and the Moorings for good seafood. The Moorings is being re-done this winter and is currently closed. I am not sure of what changes are planned.
Other good spots are Panera Bread for good coffee or lunch and the Red Parrot for good drinks and good eats...their wings are my favorite! A little further down Thames is the Black Pearl - noted for their chowder...Across the harbor, you can have lunch at the Goat Island Marina restaurant - local ferry is $2.00 head.
More Newport info at "gonewport.com"
Although Block Island is great, the ferry that goes from Newport takes 2 hours each way and that would eat up a whole day...I hope that you enjoy your trip!
