Newort,RI- Castle Hill or Francis Melbone

I've narrowed down my lodging in Newport to Castle Hill Inn and Francis Melbone. Any views that may finalize a decision. I want it to be a great surprise for my husband.

Don't know anything about Francis Melbone, but the Castle Hill Inn is the most spectacularly situated hotel in Newport (and probably just about anywhere). It has a commanding view of the bay. Highly rated food, too, I believe.

Castle Hill gets my vote too. Fantastic view and beautiful grounds. The Malbone is very nice, but on a small lot in town (not that there is anything wrong with that). I'd go with Castle Hill.

I'd go to the Francis M; you can walk to just about anything; it's lovely with great food and nice staff. Castle Hill will require a car for just about everything.

What rooms at Castle Hill would be ideal in the main inn building?

Chloe they have a great website with all the descriptions and names of the rooms. I stayed there about 10 years ago and don't remember the name of our room, just that they all had cute names (although I think the beach cottages have numbers).

We stayed at the Castle Hill Inn a few weeks ago. It was fantastic and we'd definitely go back. Just a tip about choosing a room in the main building. They served afternoon tea up on the second floor of the main building while we were there - I understand they move the location around. So unless you want people sitting and chatting directly outside your door from 4-6pm, maybe you should make sure you don't choose one of those rooms. Noticed a man opening his door to exit his room and finding the tea trolley completely blocking his way. Not a major drama and the staff were so lovely, especially the lady in charge of the afternoon tea, just something to remember if you're planning on having an afternoon nap.
