Newlyweds 1st time visit to Boston
My husband and I are planning a 3-day trip to Boston the weekend of Oct. 12. We're young, poor, and newly married. We wanna do some touristy stuff, but also enjoy just hanging out and people-watching. Places to hang? At night we're looking for bars (def. not clubs or lounges) with good beer and good prices. Suggestions, please!

Boston 3 days... poor wow lets see. Boston is pretty expensive. I personally thought its more expensive than NYC and I'm from NY ... and I lived in Boston for two years.
Anyhow transportation is a breeze, you can walk all over the city -- it is the most walkable city in the US.
Things to see... Harvard, MIT -- if you into stuff like that. What else... The Prudential building -- go the top floor has a nice restuarant and bar. And a real good viewing platform (its the tallest building there). Do down to the fenway, there are strip of bars and clubs. Probably be a lotta college kids there. During the DAY go to China town.. i wont recommend it at night. You also got the revere beach. They have tasty fish and chips there. Copley square would be fun. Oh if you're really wanna have fun Take the duck tour bus (i think its called that) its a bus that goes on water. Nice way to tour the place. Check out the library -- its real cool. Also the MFA.
blah blah blah
have fun!

You can't help but run across the "touristy stuff" when you are in Boston - just walking around. Such as parts of the Freedom Trail.....the Common...Haymarket....Beacon Hill ...the North End
So I wouldn't really plan anything if you don't want to spend the entire 3 days sightseeing - you will easily be able to pick and choose what you want to see while just walking around.
Great people watching would be on Newbury Street. Try to sit outside and grab a sandwich and a beer and watch everyone walking by. This area, Newbury Street and Back Bay is more expensive- so for dinners and stuff I would look on Boylsotn Street there are some great little Bistros or Bars. Rattlesnake, Parish Cafe, White Star. Beacon Hill is definitely a great place to walk around . Definitely go to the Seven's neighborhood bar on Charles Street. Great beer and very friendly. Or go to 75 Chestnut in the evening for a great big glass wine and sit in the window. Eat somewhere else for dinner - The Hill, Harvard Gardens, (Cambridge St) (also good for drinks later on)
The Paramount. (Charles St)
Fanueil Hall is very touristy but there are some places to hang out later on - such as Hennesseys. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more details.
Have Fun!!

I was watching a program on TV over the weekend about the landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, which featured Boston's Emerald Necklace which is a landscaped riverwalk starting at Boston Commons and connecting several of the city's parks. It looked like a nice place to spend some time walking or riding bikes.

Trying hard to think of a bar with good prices in town...can't!
But near the North Station/ Fleet center are are lots of pubs that are not lounges. Just go up and down Canal Street, Portland Street, and the surrounding blocks and you'll see tons of places. This area is near the North End and also not far from Fanieul hall

If you like Italian food you must try the North End, they have great restaurants & bakeries.
Fanuel Hall is great for people watching, the drinks aren't cheap, but Ames Plow is reasonable & you can sit outside & watch the world go by,
If you like museus don't miss the Isabelle Strewart Gardner Museum.
The Public Gardens are nice for hanging out & people watching
Have a great time
Ceck out a whale watch
