Newark to the Met--need "directions for dummies" version

We have a 10 hour layover at Newark so we want to kill the time by going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I've found several threads for directions from the Newark airport to Manhattan, however, I need directions all the way to the Met. I've been to NYC many times, but have never used public transportation to travel this distance and rarely use the subway.

Can anyone give me specific information? We may catch a cab to the met so just in case, will you please include information on how to get back to Newark via public tranportation as well? I prefer the train to ensure no traffic tie ups.

Thank you!

A cab or car service is probably the easiest way to get there. The Met is on 5th Ave and 81 St St.

Public transit, take the train to the Newark Airport stop and take Amtrack into Penn Station, this is the fastest way via train.

From Penn Station you have to get to the east side so take the bus at 34th and 7th to Park Ave, walk one block south to 33rd street and take the train uptown to 77th St and walk west from there to 5th Ave. If you get lost just ask anyone which way to The Met?

Have a great time while you are here.

Take the monorail from your terminal all the way to the end, the NJ Transit connection. From there you can take a train into Manhattan, arriving at Penn Station.

From Penn Station you can take a cab to the Met. there's no public transport that is very direct.

From Penn Station, take the 1, 2, 3, or 9 (7th Ave subway) one stop uptown to Times Square.

Transfer to the S (shuttle) to Grand Central.

Transfer to the 4, 5, or 6 to 86th St. You could also get off the 6 at 77th. The 4 and 5 are express trains, so they might be faster.

4, 5, and 6 stop at Lexington Ave so you would have to walk a bit to Fifth Ave and 80th for the Met Museum.

Or take the "E" train from Penn Station towards Queens; get off at Lexington/53St. Transfer to "6" uptown to 77th.

Hahaha. Three responses and three different answers. We should have a race and see who get there first.

BTW, the "E" train runs along 8th Ave, so once you get off the NJTransit train, head towards the rear (i.e. west side) of the station to get it. The 1/2/3/9 runs along 7th, as ellenem says. Opposite end of Penn Station.

FYI, the Met is closed on Mondays last I checked (read - last time I tried to go on a Monday and didn't think of that), so hopefully you're not planning to go on one!

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 03:18 PM.
