Newark to NYC
 

What's the easiest/best way to get from Newark Airport to see the sights in NYC for a day? We're in transit on the way to the West Indies and are spending one night at the Newark Airport Marriott in February and would like to take my teenage into the city. There are three of us. Thanks.

Take AirTran from the terminal to newark Libery Airport NJ transit station. Then transfer to NJ Transit and in 15 minutes you will be in Midtown (at Penn Station).

The Airtrain is likely to be the fastest route. When you return to your hotel, make sure you catch a train at NY Penn Station that stops at the Newark Airport Station as not every train runs through that route. Believe the cost is about $11 per person.

A slightly less expensive option is one of the bus lines that run into NYC. One route runs across 34th Street to Park and 42nd and the other runs to the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square. Believe the cost is about $7.

You can either take the Airtran to Newark and then the Path train to NYC or you can take a super shuttle to anywhere in nyc.

Actually, it depends to a certain degree on what sights you're interested in seeing first. The AirTrain connects to Amtrak which will take you to Penn Station NYC (34 st & 7th ave). This is about $11/person, I think. From there you're a short walk to the Empire State Building and other midtown stops like Rocketfeller Center, the UN, the Fifth Ave. shops etc.

But if you wanted to go to the Statue of Liberty, Greenwich Village, Chinatown or other downtown locations, the AirTrain to a PATH train is a better option (and also should be a bit less).

Keep in mind that another option that you may find easier is ordering a car service that would take you wherever you want to go. Carmel

charges $40 for the trip. They also have a $5 off coupon on their website. So even with tolls (~$8) and tip it would be ~$55.

I don't think the bus options make much financial sense at $15/person when the car service is only $40.

Maybe DON'T take Airtrain!

See if your hotel offers free shuttle to some OTHER NJT station. They will not take you to the EWR Train station, only to the airport. You will pay a $5 pp premium to get from Air Terminal to the rail station via the monorail. Even if you must pay a cab from hotel to a NJT station, you might save. Upon your return to the airport you do not pay the extra $5, so you could use the hotel shuttle getting back to the hotel.

Our group of 5 (plus luggage) has decided supershuttle's exclusive van - i.e. no stops! (for up to 7) at $75 is a good deal for us. We know that doesn't include the tip, but does it include the tolls into NYC? Thanks.

I think the AirTrain is a big PIA. Took it once, never again. Isn't worth my time or me schlepping my luggage and you still have to get a cab, bus, or subway once you get to Penn Station.

Ditto with any of the shuttles.

For me it is a car service to the airport and a cab from the airport to Manhattan and the front door of my hotel.

But Conway isn't going to a hotel, and presumably won't have luggage. They're staying in Newark and only want to go into the city for the day.

Thanks for pointing out Conway's plans, Patrick ... I got caught up in the other suggestions too.

Probably the best option would be to locate a NJT train station OTHER than EWR, and take a taxi there (or maybe the hotel shuttle will drop you off there) and take NJT to Manhattan. On return, take NJT train to EWR.

My reasoning is to avoid the $5 (?) surcharge at the airport for using the connection to the EWR rail station.
