Newark or Laguardia?
 

Am planning a trip to NYC for early fall. Have just starting pricing airfare, but have notice that a direct flight into Newark is running about $150 less than Laguardia. I'm wondering if it will be worth the savings.

How much is the typical cab fare into the city from Newark and how long does it take versus cab fare and time into city from Laguardia.

It depends. If you're on the east side or uptown LGA is much quicker and less expensive.

If you're downtown Newark and LGA are probably about the same amount of time and Newark is not too much more expensive.

Midtown the times may be similar and LGA cost less by perhaps $20.

BUT - all is relative - since a major hang-up on the Hudson River crossings can really hold things up - while an accident coming in from LGA would probably be not such a great delay.

Also - you can take a shuttle bus in from either one and a train in from Newark if you don;t have much luggage. (Not a great idea from LGA - no train direct to the city - only regular city subway/buses.)

Assuming midtown cab fare from Newark is in the range of $60 while LGA is more like $35 or so.

newark is so convenient to manhattan because there is a nj transit train that goes from newark airport straight into penn station for only 14 dollars. they run constantly. you dont have to even think about the traffic to and from LGA. even if you are going to the east side it is really easy to hop into a cab from penn station (or the subway if you have very little luggage) and be there in no time.

Save your money and go to Newark.

Public transportation from EWR is only worthwhile if you have minimal luggage and are staying near Penn Station. The crosstown traffic from Penn can take FOREVER if you have to take a cab to your final destination.

LGA is much more convenient to Manhattan (unless perhaps you're staying in Battery Park City). Anyone who suggests otherwise is, well, wrong.

But the inconvenience of EWR might be worth $150 per ticket -- that's up to you.

You can get a shuttle from EWR also--to your hotel.

Agree that where you're going in Manhattan can make a difference, but not enough to warrant spending an extra $150, especially if that's per ticket and there's more than 1 of you!

Cab fare from LGA to Manhattan usually costs $25-35. Fare from Newark about $50-60 (plus tolls). Here's a link to a popular car service. You can look at their rates which are similar to a taxi. (They also have coupon savings on the website)

There are public transport options from Newark that may make sense too, depending on where you're going, how much luggage you have and how many are traveling. Here's that page

Thanks for all your info. We are staying in Midtown, and there are 2 of us going, so I think I'm leaning toward Newark (saving us $300)......that's a one night stay in our hotel.

EWR makes sense to save $300. Book a car service, Dial 7 or Carmel, for your trip to midtown.

And be prepared -- depending on when you land, the trip into the city could take 90 minutes or longer if you have to wait at the tunnel.

For midtown, EWR makes sense, especially for a $300 savings. Just call Dial7 (formerly Tel Aviv) or Carmel to have them meet you on departing Baggage Claim. The fare is about $60 plus toll and tip. Without traffic delays it's a short trip of maybe 20-minutes, then getting to your hotel thru city traffic. But it's a flat rate, no worry about a taxi ticking off the $$$ for waiting.
