Newark hotel to NYC
 

Public transportation options/prices from Newark Airport Hampton Inn to NYC for THIS WEEKEND? Bus/train not a problem. Prefer not to drive. Five traveling in our group.

You should call the hotel and find out if the train station within one mile.

...still looking for prices and ways to get to and from. Mostly for Saturday morning into NYC and then late afternoon back to NJ.

Honestly, though, if you don't get any more answers here, calling the hotel might be your best option.

There is a station in Elizabeth and the one in NYC is called New York Penn Station.

If your hotel is near the airport (which I assume from its name), it may be simplest to go back to the airport and either take the train or one of the very frequent buses that run into New York. NJ Transit trains run from EWR into New York Penn Station (I think its $15 but I could be wrong). And the buses are about the same amount.

One other point, with 5 traveling, its going to cost around $30 per person roundtrip to NY, or $150. If you add that to your hotel cost, it may be cheaper to just stay in NY -- assuming your primary goal is to visit Manhattan.

I checked the reviews at trip advisor and saw the following:

“Park your car at the hotel, take the shuttle to the nearest bus stop and take the NJ transit bus right into 40th street in 15 minutes - perfect to save you all the hassles of parking and driving in Manhattan. The service was excellent and the ushers were very helpful. Will definitely stay there again.”

I won't be able to check its accuracy, so you will have to take it from here it you think it sounds like a good option. I might be able to check into it tomorrow.

FYI, we changed our reservation to the LaQuinta in Manhattan. It was about $50 more, but the closer location was well worth it.

You have chosen wisely, I think. People often assume they're going to save more by staying out in NJ, and this underscores that you have to check the numbers to make sure. It's not always cheaper. Now if you had been staying at the Robert Treat Hotel in downtown Newark, you could have taken the PATH for $2 each way, and that would have been a relative bargain.

Thanks for the NJ hotel tip, Doug. I will pass it along to my DD who loves to visit NYC more frequently and doesn't mind staying out farther. Her college-aged friends just choke on the hotel price and can't see the real benefit of staying downtown, even splitting the bill.
