Newark hotel-broadway play
 

My wife and I are going to Aruba and passing through New York by way of Newark. We have a layover in New York City and are flying out the following morning. We have time to catch a play (The Producers) and would like recomdations about where we should spend the night. Either at the airport or in the City... keeping in mind that we will have cab fares and need to get to the airpot by 7:30am the following day. Not looking to spend alot $150ish. Not familier with New York City so keep in mind that your helping a real rookie.

Will you have all your luggage with you? If so, it would make more sense to stay overnight at a Newark Airport hotel and take public transportation or a cab each way. It would probably make sense to do it this way even if you can leave your luggage somewhere.

I don't really think you want to stay in Newark or by the airport. Plus it's quite a trek back and forth to NYC. You should be able to find a hotel in NYC for $150 per night. I don't know when you're coming but tickets for The Producers are pretty hard to come by (unless you want to pay $480 for VIP seats).

We got two tickets in September front row balcony $45 each...not bad. Worried about the cab fare. What will a cab cost to and from newark to the play and back?

There's a Marriot Courtyard just off the aiport property - call them direct and you should be able to negotiate a price within your budget. They have a free shuttle to and from the airport - you can leave your bags there and then take the get the hotel shuttle back to the airport. From there take either Olympic bus or better yet the new AirTrain. Cost is approx. $11 on either. The aiport monorail system takes you to a transfer terminal for direct connection to a NJ transit train into Penn Station NYC - total travel time is about 25 minutes or less. If you're heading into the city when traffic is heavy it's a big time-saver. The hotel should be able to get a shuttle for you back from the airport later that night. If you take Olympic bus you'll get off at Port Authority - an easy walk to the theater district. Penn Station is another 8-10 blocks away (depending on how you measure). Tip for getting cab at either place if you need one: walk a block or so downtown from Penn or the PA terminal (on 8th or 7th respectively) and hail a cab from the street - faster than typically much faster than waiting in line at the cab stand.

The hotels by Newark Airport are very nice, not your no- tell- motel type.<BR>Best bet is to stay in Newark, but cab it to the city, sightsee,eat,see the show then cab it back..in the morning, there you are!

Expect to pay somewhere around $40 plus tolls from Newark airport to Manhattan.

Do you really want to tote the luggage to the city and back to the airport? It would probably be best to stay at a hotel near the airport. If you decide to do this it would be helpful if the hotel provided shuttle service. A cab to midtown from the airport will be close to $45. From Manhattan to Newark cost would be the metered rate plus $10, plus tip and toll - should be around $45. The airport bus would be $11 a person and it would leave you within walking distance of almost every theater.
