What is the best way to get from JFK to Newark airport - quickest and cheapest, will have hold luggage as flight originating from UK.

There is no easy, quick, low cost way.

-Easiest / fastest will be taxi or car service, but that won't be cheap.
-Cheapest will be AirTrain to Train/Subway to Train to AirTrain (at least 3 connections)
-Middle ground will be express bus, with one connection.

Either way you need to plan on at least 1.5 hrs by car, and 2-2.5hrs by any bus/train/subway combo.

If you haven't yet booked your tickets, LGA is far closer to JFK and served by a direct bus connection. It may also be worth your £ to pay a little more to book a connecting flight out of JFK.

FYI, JetBlue offers 5 non-stop flights a day from JFK to TPA. Delta and AA one each.

Delta offers 5 non-stop flights from LGA to TPA.

JFK to Newark is a nightmare. Either you get a car service (well over $100 and can take forever if you hit traffic), take a shuttle bus into the city and then pick up another one then out to Newark (about 3 hours travel time) or you take public transit (with multiple changes, you need to haul luggage up and down various sets of stairs in Penn Station and you need to leave at least 2 hours). the time given is from the time you get on the transit to when you get off. to that you need to add at least an hour to get through immigration and then pick up you luggage at JFK and to arrive at Newark at least 2 hours before your flight. So - you need to be sure you have a minimum of 5 hours between flights (but a late arrival, the arrival of a lot of international flights at the same time - which can clog up immigration - and traffic or accident on the road can mean you really need 6 hours.

Agree if possible to get a flight out of LGA instead - that way you are probably safe with 4 hours - and there is a direct shuttle bus from one to the other.

Actually, the fastest way is to take a helicopter between the two airports, but let us assume that is not an option.

The next best in terms of cost/convenience would be the direct private bus service between the two airports. It takes 90 minutes and costs US $30. Runs every hour on the hour. You can take a private car service for a faster trip. Dial 7 car service will cost about US$80-100 for the transfer, depending on the car you choose and number of bags. The rates do not include tolls or tip. You can simply call them when you land, or make an advance booking, see http://www.dial7.com/. (Calling when you land is easier as you won’t be charged wait time, they have lots of cars standing by.) Without traffic the trip between the two airports will take about an hour. Rush hours are weekdays and are generally between 7-9:30 am and 3 – 7 pm, and can add to the overall trip time.

I would agree that as a comfortable cushion you would want 4-5 hours between flights just in case, but unless all things go wrong, you can make the transition fairly smoothly using a shuttle bus or private car transfer. I land internationally at JFK a few times a year, and am in the Dial 7 car generally within an hour of landing, and in suburban New Jersey most times within 2 hours of landing.

Taking a private car service, shuttle or a taxi is really the only viable option unless you are on a very tight budget, have many, many hours between flights and a good deal of patience, and even then with more than 1 bag per person you will be struggling. Our public transport is not equipped to handle baggage, and there is a dearth of escalators and elevators which add to the problem.

I would agree that a connecting flight out of La Guardia may be a better option for someone landing at JFK.

I think the trip is similar to the one between Heathrow and Gatwick--bloody awful and on opposite sides of the city. If you're trying to do this any time during rush hour, depend on awful traffic. Quickest is either using the direct shuttle b/w the 2 or using trains--train from JFK into Manhattan and then train from Manhattan to Newark.

I hope you will count this as a lesson learned that it's simply not a good idea to fly into JFK and out of Newark or vice versa. Kind of silly and you should scold your travel agent (or yourself if you made these arrangements yourself).

If the OP is traveling during the day and during the week, I think the Airtrain is the best way. You come into and go out of Penn Station. But there are stairs to climb, and you may not have easy access to an elevator (plus, you'll have to buy the tickets separately, so you have to allow a few minutes for that and for fumbling with the currency and the machine).

Yes, it's a pain with luggage, but it is reliable and allows you to skip traffic, though in truth it's probably a wash in terms of time.

I'd wager you might do this entire trip in a little over 2 hours if you get reasonably lucky with the scheduling, but allow 3 hours to be safe. So it's no faster than any other method (except for a car service), but it's about the same price as the direct bus.

The direct bus is the easiest (and certainly the easiest if you have a lot of luggage), though it's slow.

If you have tons of luggage (and especially if you are more than one person), then bite the bullet and arrange for the private transfer through Dial 7.
