Newark Airport to Newburgh, NY
 

I am planning a fall 2012 trip to visit friends in the Newburgh, NY area combined with a few days in NYC. We are planning to fly into Newark then would like to go directly up to Newburgh. I don't want to rent a car until we get to Newburgh. Then I will turn it back in and we would like to ride the train into Manhattan later in the week. Is there a train or car service we can get for 5 of us from Newark to Newburgh?

That's a 70-75 mile trip. Go googling for car services, but you're talking about a 90+ minute ride and crossing state lines. The costs will be high.

You may want to rent at Newark, just check into the drop charges if you turn the car in to the agency in NY.

Yes, fly to Stewart. You can fly into Stewart and out of Newark. The flight might be a little more expensive (maybe not!) but it would be much more convenient and might save money over getting from Newark to Newberg.

I believe the answer regarding a train is NO (at least not directly ... though you can get someplace up there on the Port Jervis line if you are coming when the line is running, but these trains are few and far between). But there is no train service directly to Newburgh (it's on the west bank of the Hudson, which is not well served by train lines).

And it's going to be extremely costly with a car service. Anything is possible, but expect to pay in the hundreds for a private transfer.

I'd second, third, and fourth the idea of an open-jaw ticket. But it would be much better to rent a car at EWR if you are flying into there and might even be cheaper to drop it off at a train station like North White Plains before you come into the city (you'd have to rent from Hertz to be able to do that, though).

There is no train service to Newburgh whether you start from NYC, Newark airport or White Plains airport. A car service might be possible from White Plains. Stewart airport is in Newburgh. Beacon, NY is across the Hudson from Newburgh. You can take a Metro North train from Grand Central in Manhattan to Beacon, NY if your friends can pick you up there.

The best place to fly into is Stewart. Don't try and reinvent the wheel.

I asked about White Plains because I looked at the map again and realized the town we are actually going to is farther east of Newburgh than I thought. (Patterson) I just picked Newburgh because it was the biggest town I could see in that area. I thought there might be a train. Would it be easier to rent a car at White Plains and drive north from there? We sometimes get airfare deals to White Plains on the alerts I am signed up for. Would there be a train from somewhere into NYC so that we could leave the car? I've never heard of Stewart before. Wouldn't you have to connect at one of the bigger airports anyway?

The Patterson NY I see on the map is between Brewster and Pawling. Metro North trains go up that line and you may be able to get pretty close to your destination. Trains originate in NY/Manhattan at Grand Central Terminal, so you could take a bus from Newark airport that stops near Grand Central, then Metro North. If you fly into White Plains, it's even easier (from train station to train station, that is) .

ok, Patterson is on the east side of the Hudson, Newburgh is on the westside. Apples and oranges. If you want to get to Patterson, then White Plains makes most sense. You can rent car there, but they are usually more expensive than other locations since the airport is small and out of the way.

The White Plains airport is not close to the WP Metro North Station. You would have to take a taxi there and with 5 people and suitcases, that might take 2 taxis. I am almost positive their are no shuttles to the White Plains Metro North train station, which services Patterson. Maybe your friend could pick you at in White Plains?

"Unfortunately it is a little harder than it once was. There used to be a bus that went directly from White Plains train station to the airport, but in February 2010 this bus was cancelled. You may still see information about this bus, it was called Airlink. The train station still stocked Airlink brochures, and nobody has updated the airport’s website. This bus does not run any more! But that doesn’t mean you can’t get to the airport from the train station!

What it does mean is you will have to walk across the street to get an alternate bus. Right across from the train station is the White Plains bus center, and from there you can board a bus which will take you right to the airport. You will need to have exact change in quarters ($2.25), or a MetroCard. If you’d prefer the MetroCard route you can purchase them from Waxman’s News in the lower level of the train station.

Sometimes there are express buses, and other times you may need to make a transfer. You can use the online trip planner to see what bus you need to take for your date and time. For the origin put Railroad Station: White Plains Railroad Station and for the destination Airport: Westchester County Airport"

There is no place convenient to rent a car near Patterson, unless perhaps a local Enterprise location. Since you're going to rent a car anyway, just rent one at White Plains airport upon arrival.

The driving distance from White Plains to Patterson is about 40-45min. About the same distance from Newburgh airport. White Plains has much more frequent and varied service.

Another option is LaGuardia. It's about 60-70min from Patterson, depending on time of day. But, if you're hesitant to drive from Newark for perhaps fear of driving in a congested area, then renting a car at LGA may not be for you.

Just so you know, it's particularly difficult to park and ride on the busiest parts of the Metro North corridor along the Hudson. There are garages in White Plains where you can park for the day if you are coming into Manhattan, but this is still a slog from where you're staying.

Regardless of your destination, you need to rent a car on arrival and not try to negotiate several local buses with a bunch of people and luggage. It's strange to me that a fairly large group is so reluctant to rent a car on arrival at whichever airport you fly into.

If you fly into White Plains airport, then rent there. If you fly into White Plains and rent from Hertz (and only Hertz), you can probably drop the car off at the NORTH WHITE PLAINS Metro North station instead of the White Plains airport (probably without a substantial drop-off fee) and take a quick ride into Manhattan for that part of your trip. This might be the best solution for you. Then fly home from either EWR or LaGuardia, both of which are easy to reach from Manhattan.

It would help us help you if we understood what you're trying to do. Is it the high price of car rentals at Newark? Avoiding a drop off fee before heading into Manhattan? Not wanting to drive when you first arrive or something else?
