New Yorl State Fair by Megabus
We took the Megabus to Syracuse from NYC. Outside Penn Station lines tacitly form for various destinations. There are no stantions, signs, or indications where to stand when. We were fortunate that the weather was quite nice since there is no overhang or seats.
The buses themselves are fine with comfortable seats, wifi, A/C and bathrooms (which we did not test.) The bus to Syracuse was 15 minutes late and the bus back was one hour late. When several people tried to call to ascertain the status of the bus, they were given vague answers after a long time on hold. Of course, planes often are late, but at least there are seats or the floor and a roof. Megabus advertises that they have a promotional sale of $1 seats but people were grumbling that no one had that price. We paid $28 per person each way. We have never been to state fair and besides thinking we would see some well shaven and behaved animals, we did not know what to expect. The animals were fine, it was my fellow New Yorkers that scared me. I have never seen so many overweight people. This could be the first place I have ever been called Slim. But the reason was obvious once you started walking about. There was a stand that offered deep fried macaroni and cheese. Mac and Cheese! Another had deep fried cheesecake and one advertised the ultimate deep fried desert chocolate brownie with toppings. We shared a few dishes-onion petals, that were just deep fried onion bits, a vanilla shake, and fried green tomatoes. We had the shake because NY is a dairy state and the ice cream was supposed to fresh and creamy which it was. Otherwise you could have just stuck your head in a deep fryer. Our cousins did, however, took us to diner at China Road one night which had an excellent Peking Duck which they ordered in advance. Here are some photos from the fair. http://picasaweb.google.com/Aduchamp...StateFair2009# |
Thanks for sharing. I do miss the Texas State Fair where every food item it serves is deep-fried.
I did pay $1 for my trip on Megabus from Boston to NY in March this year. |
Yk
How long in advance did you make your reservation? |
Aduchamp1, I think it was 6 weeks in advance. Only my mid-week ticket was $1. My husband came down on Sat and we returned Sunday. Our total was $28 for 2 r/t tickets.
ac291 just reported getting $1 tickets for 2 people r/t NYC/DC; for a grand total of $4.50: http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...omment-5917958 |
I guess I bought my tickets too late.
|
yes our $1 tickets are midweek and midday...but thats what we wanted...to arrive late in both cities...good deal!
sounds like a great time Aduchamp1 - is this fair on yearly? |
Yes, the fair is an annual event. And though it occupies a huge parcel of land, it seems to remains fallow for most of the other 50 weeks.
I think the state fairs in the South and Midwest have greater reputations than the ones back east, even though the one in Syracuse supposedly attracts 90,000 people a day. |
We'll soon be known as the coronary state. I would have been repulsed.

I did not even get into the amount of rented mechanical wheel chairs for people who were not seniors. The only good thing was the normal weights of most children. The kids who took care of the animals were almost all in good shape. |
Remember that YOU chose the destination... Next time try South Beach where you won't be allowed into a club because you're TOO FAT!
The State Fair Circuit is the only place you can do inland Whale Watching on dry land... And we blame the Government for poor health care... Maybe we should post... Where can you see the Fattest People? I can comment on this because my High School Yearbook caption was "LifeGoal... To be so Fat I can Hardly Walk" I'm almost there!!!!!! |

When most travel to a destination for the first time they have little more than expectations. My expectations were of animal competitions, rides, and food vendors but I of what strpe I had no idea. Nor did I have a pre-conception of the fair goers besides they would be upstaters rather than downstaters. I have been to South Beach many times without the benefit of a bathing suit. And I hope you do not reach your life goal. |
Wow... you've gone suitless at the State Fair?!?
|
I think I read that wrong... my bad... but if you do change your mind and do the Fair Nakked... You should get quite an audience... many have never seen a skinny person!!!!
