NEW YORKS FINGERLAKES

Any information on 'must see/must do' things for this area would be appreciated. Hubby and I will be there the 5th and 6th of July and enjoy siteseeing, hiking and shopping.

The Finger Lakes cover a fairly large area. You might get more help if you're a little more specific about exactly where you're staying.

We plan to start in the north, maybe Auburn and head south to Horsehead. We've heard that Watkins Glen State Park is worth a visit. Because the trip is so short, drive-by's will be about the most we'll have time for.

Yes, Watkins Glen State Park (aka "the gorge") is a must if you enjoy hiking. I've heard that Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca is nice too. If you like wine, do stop in at some of the wineries for some tastings.

I second the suggestion to stop at some of the wineries. Ithaca is a nice college town to just sort of wander around, plus I think you can go up to Cornell if that interests you. There are tons of state parks in the area, which all have hiking. I would look online at New York State Parks in that area - there may be maps with hiking trails marked. We've camped up there several times in the State Parks and they're very nice - very well maintained. Enjoy and let us know how it was!
