New Yorker Hotel - good or bad?

I have been offered cheap accomodation in December in the New Yorker hotel near Madison Square. The rate is much cheaper than the other hotels. Can anyone let me know if the hotel is okay? Is there a reason why it is so cheap? Thanks!

I went to several NYC web sites and this hotel
wasn't listed, which would make me question its
acceptability too. Maybe someone out there can
comment, but on my twice a year trips to the city,
I think Eighth Avenue could give a traveler a
bad impression of the city. Microsoft
Expedia (www.expedia.com)has a Health & Safety
page for NYC (select Find and New York Traveler's
Directory). My personal opinion as a single traveler's best location to stay -- Murray Hill.
Would like to hear your comments when you get back.

Hello: I agree, stay in the Murray Hill area. I spent 4 days in New York by myself in June and stayed at the Shelburne Murray Hill Hotel which is kind of expensive but very nice. I found Murray Hill to be close to everything, Empire State, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, Macy's, Bloomingdales..... Murray Hill feels safe and is a very pleasant neighbourhood, I didn't feel unsettled at any time. Have a great trip.

If you are really so concerned, check out the Helmsley Middletown. Very nice, extra ammentities, and very well located and reasonable priced. We were very pleased and will stay there again.

I just read a great review from an individual who just stayed at the New Yorker.
