Well I grew up in NYC (city schools until I finished 7th grade - at 12) and suburban schools which I started in 8th grade at 12, turned 13 part way through.

I and all my friends graduated from high school at 17 - as did my 2 step daughters. I realize that part of this depends on what month you're born and since I'm late in the year I was one of the younger ones - but we were all within a year. (And in NYC if you were SP you graduated at 16.)

Has this changed?

I don't know what SP is, but I was very advanced for my grade. I never knew anyone to graduate at 16 - 17 only happened if they were young compared to most in the grade.

Still - I'm not sure that's relevant. Learning on vacation, as long as there's plenty of fun too, is always a good thing. 12 year olds are still in the "learning is a natural extension of curiosity phase", so why not explore areas that interest them from a learning perspective, instead of only focusing on video games and fast food?
